Its a photonics center. I don't understand it at all, but everyone says its a big big deal.

Well there is a company in Fort Wayne that just announced a big defense contract and they were moving a bunch of people to Rochester. From the people I know that work there they do a lot with satelites and weather stuff

I'm not going to say I'm the most outgoing person, but at some point I would think making friends can't quite be that difficult.
- HonkFortheGoose

My wife really struggled with it. I had 3 friends there already, and made friends with about 20 Canadians because we all ended up at the one bar that played hockey. But I think going into it with little to no common context makes things difficult.

Also, I'm just generally a wonderful person who anyone would want to be friends with.

But how much of that disappears in higher rent, higher prices for everything (larger city), taxes, etc. That's the bummer when you see some of that stuff

I pay 9500 a year in taxes in east amherst, when i lived in alabama, i had the same size house 3000sq ft and paid 750 a year in taxes.... Very expensive to live here unless you live in the ghetto.

Being childless and getting a fat STAR exemption also helps.

I can see how it could be a struggle. It's part of why if I do it, it'll be somewhere I know someone. I have a friend that works for the Richmond Fire Department and 2 friends that live about 45 mins away from Richmond in a town called Farmville. I figure that has to be helpful to start.

I pay $1200 for property taxes on a 2,000 square foot home in florida

no state taxes

the key down here is to buy as much of a house as you can afford, and skip the insane rental market

Wow, that seems crazy. I remember we were house shopping when we lived in Rochester and things were never below 2k, but didn't often get over like 4k (still huge compared to here).

Granted, that's for lower-end houses (100k range), but good neighborhoods.

It's also been 15 years since then, so I'm sure that it's gone up

Cost of living is pretty cheap down this way. Taxes on my house+land every year is about $300 (plus about $350 for 2 cars). In NY that would probably be $2k/year on my house.

Gas is cheap too. hehe

4800 in property tax

1200 in car insurance (2 cars)

Holy crap...we rented an apartment in Brighton, basically the other side of the road from that bowling alley (LOVED our location - Wegmans 2 minutes down the road). We were looking in various spots around there basically - forever suburbs.

Grandparents have a gorgeous condo in Jupiter florida right on the ocean... Plan on taking that over, just not fond of the $1000 a month for "maintenence" even though it is paid off.
