No earthquakes.

No tornadoes.

No hurricanes.

No flooding rivers.

I staying put.

Hurricanes aren't bad because you usually have advance notice. I could never live where tornadoes are "regular"

We get some nasty t-storms, crazy heavy rain and some hail, but none of the above.

I think the its cheaper to live in Buffalo thing is very debateable. I have found it to be the opposite.

I was doing a bit of research last night and for the same type of job I have here in Buffalo I would get paid about $15,000 more in Richmond, VA.

But how much of that disappears in higher rent, higher prices for everything (larger city), taxes, etc. That's the bummer when you see some of that stuff

I say go for it. Moving was probably one of the best life decisions I have made to date. I miss the friends and family sure, also the sports. but I get to see every game with NHL Game Center or I go to a Bills backers bar. Skype is a great way to see the family still.

I have a friend that lives in Richmond. He said that in terms of cost of living it's not any different. He's been there 5 years now.

In general I feel like I would probably only go where I at least know 1 other person. I know it probably seems silly, but I need to have some sort of personal contact if I'm moving somewhere. I actually have 2 other friends that live about 45 mins from there as well.

Major development here in Rochester announced late yesterday with Mega grant in a very high tech field - photonics - that has the potential to be the next Eastman Kodak around here. I'm staying put.
- Der Kaiser

are you talking about at Exellis or whatever they are called now? You are getting a bunch of the Fort Wayne office people to fill that place out.. i think somethign like 400 people from the Fort Wayne one have the option of moving there for that grant

There's an $800 a year difference according to that. I'm fairly certain that wouldn't make or break me over an entire year.

Believe it or not, apartments in Buffalo are pretty pricey these days. Even if it was equivalent, it wouldn't be hurting me any because according to what I found I'd be making quite a bit more for the same job there.

I think it may be time to make a move.

Yeah, sorry man, but the midwest is out for me, those things pop up out of nowhere. That scares the crap out of me.

Honestly, I don't even remember what we paid when we lived in Rochester. The best part was that heat was included in the rent.

I pay less than $800 on my mortgage down here though, so I'm happy.

Property taxes.

I found where I am now, over a 30 year mortgage I am saving $114,000 ($3,800 per year) on property taxes compared to a place in Hamburg

i can get that.. but where i live is not the area you hear about on the news.. that is further south and west. we are right on the edge. I think the closest i have been to an actual tornado is about 60 miles and that was 12 years ago

Yeah, property taxes are nuts, but I figured they'd be high in a big-ish VA city as well.

Wow...I just looked, and it says Richmond's population is 204k and Buffalo is 260k. I would have figured Richmond would be bigger.

The thing I think would bother me the most is there's no big sports team there. It's not the be all end all, but I do enjoy going to sporting events, even if they're not teams I generally root for.

I think you need to consider that the "top" may be getting tax breaks (not subsidies) yet they still pay a huge percentage of taxes collected from individuals...like the top 5% of income producers pay 50% (or some high percentage) of those taxes from individuals.
Also consider that 40%+/- of the US population doesn't pay taxes and are a drain on those who do pay taxes...which includes the Rich and the Middle Class.

So yes, I would say that the Middle Class is getting F'd ... but would focus the blame elsewhere.

Our Great Society has produced a class of abusers in which they are rewarded for a culture that expects handouts...let's be clear ... THAT DOES NOT MEAN that I think all Lower Class or the poor of this country are abusers.

It really drives me nuts to hear those who abuse claim it is Ok because it is the Government
Yea, ok...the Government in that sense is me pal.

- IonSabres

I love talking points...do you actually know who make up the quote unquote 40percent? A majority of them are people who work...so they do pay a payroll tax,but dont make above the federal tax rate so hence why some people agree with raising minimum wage. Just over 10 percent are elderly on SS and military disabled people, but yeah lets tax them. Also students ..oh yeah how about the hedge funds managers and investors who make their money from "capitol gains"..again this is hockeybuzz and facts have no place here.

If I had to do it all over again

skip college and go right into the military

lock up that pension at 38

Then start my own business, work a part time job 20 hours a week if needed til the business took off

DC is about 2 hours if I'm remembering correctly. I think it's actually easier to get to/from Raleigh.

I hate the Canes.

Unfortunately I'm not a huge baseball fan. I'll go to games once in awhile for something to do, but the game really doesn't mean anything to me.
