I'm thinking some of these other groups look at the league and just know that there will be one or more teams relocating soon... probably save a couple of hundred million in fees going that route.

Didn't the NHL throw out some crazy insane relocation fee when Jim Balsillie wanted to buy/move the Coyotes? I forget, but I think it was well over $100M.

Good way to weed out those who aren't serious.

So companies should just be cool donating $2M to the NHL for the chance to own a franchise, a selection process that they have no input/control over?

Something like that. Isn't the franchise fee close to $500 million now?

Remember that time it was so empty and so quiet you could audibly hear a Flyers fan say "Its another capacity crowd here at the Prudential Center." on the TV feed?

Good times.

The NHL already knows where the teams are going. This is all a formality.

Personally, I would rather have contraction.

relocate to anywhere that wants a team not Philadelphia
- ComeGetTrolled

i guess the "they should just relocate to your mom's bedroom since most of the team hangs out there anyway" jokes are just too easy?

Well start with the 300M lost at that time by the owner which was how many years ago, the money lost since then and the issue with Glendale.

Bettman wasn't going to let Mr Blackberry move the Yotes for any price
It was too much of an ego thing for his failed market.
Yeah the team in Phoenix helped clinch the 20 years late TV deal

Yeah, I think the other potential applicants realized that too... LV seems like a lock... only thing that can possibly derail QC is the exchange rate.

Can't blame the others for not wanting to tie up $10M, and flush $2M of it down the toilet, for some minor publicity.

Really? I'd prefer mass relocation to better markets... I think the overall skill level of the players is good right now and getting better with every successive draft.

Not to mention the potential influx of talent that could come if the KHL ceased to exist.

I think Alt has been the true forgotten potential NHL defenceman in the Flyers system.
- flyler

It would be good for him to show something this season, and hopefully he gets some NHL games under his belt where he's a solid performer, then maybe he can be traded to a team who needs some low-end defensive depth.

Whether or not they can afford it isn't the point. It's $2M you'll never see again if you're not one of the chosen few.

So who moves to the WEST if Quebec and Las Vegas get teams. I heard it could be Carolina. They could build rivalries with Dallas and Nashville. Detroit is not an option they said.

IIRC it was $250M because at the time that was what they thought they could get for an expansion team in T.O.

Speculation out of Toronto is that an expansion franchise in Markham could cost the buyer upwards of $1B with the expansion fee and the fee the NHL will have to negotiate with the Leafs. That's why no bidders came forth this round.

Wasn't some of it because they also hated Basillie too? He kind of tried to buy the Coyotes some back door way. Funny thing is that if a guy like that wanted to really own a team you know he would have really cared for that team and made it successful

He can become a UFA next month. His best bet may be an AHL contract if no one is interested in an NHL deal.

He made it well known that he intended to buy them and move them, which pissed off Bettman (the owners). So they created some crazy relocation fee while he was negotiating. Basically, he tried to bully his way to ownership with money and the NHL was against it. I think he realizes that you cannot make that team successful. There will never be a die-hard fan base in some areas. That's why a whopping 200 people showed up at the "Save the Thrashers" rally.
