Listen to Genesis albums from the 70s, yrs he is that good - BiggE
I saw Phil Collins sit in on drums with Clapton during a Clapton and friends concert. It was absolute genius. Clapton, Mark Knopfler, and Collins. Just awesome.
I know all of you audiophiles will disagree because it's not super technical or hard to play, but I'll always take a band that can get this kind of reaction, has this kind of intimacy with their fans, and doesn't need a barricade to feel safe over 4 dudes up there playing the most technical piece of music ever created with 5 layers of security standing on a 15-foot-high stage where everyone just stands still for 3 hours.
Well the Mydland era is my fave, so I'd have to disagree - BiggE
It seems that the general consensus is that the Europe 72 Tour was their pinnacle. He said that after 76, they really stopped being the same and became more and more "popish" if you will. I'm not saying you're wrong, just that the GD were a very serious thing to him, and he didn't like what they became in the 80s, and didn't like the "new crowd."
But like I said, he's definitely an elitist. He'd never say you're wrong to like them, just that you never saw a "real" show.
yes, listen to all that early Genesis stuff. The guy is a phenomenal drummer. - MBFlyerfan
To a layman, not a musician, hard to know the difference between a drummer that is phenomenal, and one that is average. As a music fan, I have my favorites.
My dad would tell you that you never saw a real Dead show, but he is most definitely a Grateful Dead elitist. - jmatchett383
I "discovered" the Grateful Dead in high school, in the mid to late 80's. It was odd to me to discover how weirdly possessive older Dead Heads were of the band. Most were really nice people when you went to shows, but you ran into some where you just thought "lighten up, bumhole".

My dad is a really nice, outgoing, friendly guy for the most part, and he'd never discourage someone from liking whatever they're into. But when it comes to the GD, he just sees them as a pre-77 and post-77 band.
