I think the main point I'd make on this is that TM hasn't built us so our window is next year, or even 3 years from now. We're still a "future" team, the difference between us before draft day and after is our future has been moved up a few years.

His major additions have been about the near future - Kane, O'Reilly, Bogosian - all are 25 or under, and the rest of the future will grow slightly behind them - and Risto, Pysyk, McCabe highlight how he has set our defense up to grow next year and beyond.

This all looks to me like good asset management that fits our plan - but the team's plan is to improve next year and build towards being a true contender in, say, 3.

I honestly think this is about fans' expectations becoming misaligned with the actual plan the team is executing on, and executing on well.

Good points. Seems a few better than average signings that he has done has caused the fan base to think we will be contenders this coming season . We are better but how much better still has yet to be seen. The additions have put us on the right track for years to come , but as you pointed out. They are still young and growing .

I think this goes above an individual GM's plan, this is about the organization. We're fans of the team, not the GM. But this is how the modern era of sports goes, said team fails to achieve its goals, fires people in high places as a publicity stunt. Hires new guy(people), said people are now hailed as saviors as they will not make the mistakes the other guys did. Fans buy in. Rinse, repeat.

As DD pointed out, we are still paying Erhoff over 3/4 of a million dollars per year for the next 13 years. That wreaks or organizational dysfunction. And that's not the only digression. My point is Murray, and the Sabres still have a lot to prove to me. Plans are cute but success is is a whole different thing.

And, I don't need / want a slow Dman like Franson here with a long contract.

So you'd rather have an old, concussed, quitter instead.

Honestly, I am fine with not signing any of these leftover dmen!
I would just play the younger kids we have, and get what we need next year, or even after.
We will not win the cup, nor make the playoffs next year, or even maybe the year after.

You realizes the bad Erhoff contract was ok'd by Pegula, right? The same Pegula that ok'd the $857k buyout for 14 years.

If we can get him for 2 years 8 or 9 million I'd be fine with it.

The problem is that he is looking for a long term contract, and I want no part of that.

There's no way Ehrhoff is coming back here
I still think we should've traded him instead of buying him out though, but whatever

Franson is a better way to go IMO
I don't put too much stock in his troubles w Nashville
Lots of guys get traded at the deadline & struggle to fit in
Look at Vermette in Chicago
Guy has been a solid player his whole career, but was a healthy scratch at times in the playoffs
Ended up finding his groove & got some big goals for them though
Franson is a decent defenseman
He's not leading us to the playoffs or anything, but he'll help the pp & is ok in his own end
Prob not a long term solution, but also a guy we can trade at the deadline & perhaps get back the young LH defenseman we need
I remember philly trading an aging Zhitnik to Atlanta for a young Coburn (what a steal btw)

If Ehrhoff retires in the next couple years, we would have been hit with a huge cap penalty. Actually glad we bought him out.

Sure, I'm just saying don't just base your decision on what playoff spot we have next year.
