I thought a Wings fan was on here not too long ago and said Quincey wasn't very good for them last year. I could be wrong on that. He has only 1 more year on his contract then he'll be a UFA so not a big risk to get him.

I'll admit, I didn't watch a ton of Red Wings games this past season. But his stats aren't terrible and he played in 73 games. He finished 3rd in scoring on their blueline, had a plus rating, and averaged 19 minutes per game. Doesn't seem like a terrible option just looking at those few things.

I don't need to elaborate!!!
Why do you think he is not signed yet?

- Sabresfan88

Good analysis then. He's not signed because he's pondering different offers/teams. 6 were in on him on 7/1, 3 are in on him now. Erhoff also isn't signed as he's good also

He's not signed because he's looking for 6 mill a year, last thing I read about him was he wants a Jeff Petry type deal 6 years 5.5 a year.

Yeah, here's what I think. While it's unlikely any of us has a clue about what's inside Murray's head, and things like the salary cap, NTCs/NMCs, and the declining economy's impact on future revenues make it nearly impossible to trade anyone of any significance, it's not inconceivable that the Sabres could make a mid-season move.

Kane, ROR, Eichel and Girgens are probably not on the block since they represent the young core of this team and are all locked up long-term. We all know ROR's contract is insane, but given the length and amount of the others, it seems unlikely to me there's a better deal out there. Remember Ted Black is a numbers guy, and 7.5 mil 6 years from now will be looking pretty good. Ennis's deal is an especially favorable one for the club. You might even be able to throw Kane into this category b/c his value to the Sabres is high given his hustle and toughness.

Weber, Legawns and McGinn are popular choices for a change of venue, but their UFA status would mean they'd need to go to a contender for the receiving team to be willing to assume the risk. That said, what's the likelihood of a contender sending the Sabres something worthy of a blockbuster? That's not even taking into account Weber sucking for the last 2 years, Foligno getting a reputation of being lazy, and McCormick being more fragile than the leg lamp in A Christmas Story. This, coming from the guy who actually owns a McCormick jersey.

As far as young talent at forward goes, Reinhart, Girgensons and Ennis are the only roster players in that category. They're all tradable, but not enough to bring in an impact player. To me, the Sabres would need to include one of Baptiste, Carrier or Bailey to get another team interested. Possible, though Eichel seems like he's got a future here.

Lastly, if they're really trying to fix the recent injury problem at defense, they're not going to trade any defensemen. Even still, it's more likely they'll do what they did last year and bring in a veteran like Andrej Meszaros to temporarily fill the gap until Gorges is healthy again (a few weeks?). I haven't looked to see who like that is available, but they found someone last year and could probably do it again.

We Sabres fans have gotten used to the fact that Murray rarely makes any moves. In fact, who really does anymore? I'd love to be wrong, but not at the expense of 23 / 15 / 28 / 9. You can have Matt freaking Ellis. Twice.

- homiedclown

Agreed except Reinhart, Girgs and Ennis absolutely would bring back an impact player in a trade. But, they won't be traded so irrelevant anyway

Our defense core makes about as much sense as the Bills QB situation. How did we tank like that, have the assets we had, cap room and willingness to spend and come away looking like this? Murray is not the golden god he's been made out to be.

edit: Not that they are bad I just don't see who fits where. I think the loss of Big Z clouds that situation.

I think the improvements made up front will drastically help the defense to be quite honest. When the defense is getting much more support from the offense and the offense is driving possession during the game the defense won't have the amount of pressure on them that they've had the last few years.

It's not a championship caliber defense currently, it's just very young and inexperienced for the most part.

ok, what are they supposed to do? good defense is hard to find. give Sekera 6 years? trade for a aging Bouwmeester? they need to just stand pat with what they have.

Quincey sucked his first time back. Was solid last season. He will be 31 at the start of his next deal as hes a UFA after this season. He could play on the second pairing and be fine. My guess is he will be pushed out of Detroit after this season by the Mike Green signing and the younger defenseman coming up from grand rapids.

The fact that he's signed only through this year is part of what makes him attractive to me. I'd like to get one more vet guy in for this year in order to take some pressure off the kids. It would also allow some of our guys to play their natural position instead of their offside and would probably keep McCabe in Rochester for one more year of seasoning.

Not any slower than Gorges, Weber, Rudy, Bog, plus his first outlet pass is better, he's bigger, he hits more and is better on the PP than any of the those 4.

The guy avoids contact like every player in his zone has a communicable disease. Whatever stat you're looking at isnt accurate.

I really would rather sign Ehrhoff to a short deal, rather than signing Franson.
We don't need Franson.
Just play the younger kids.

They are already paying Ehrhoff $857,143 a year for the next 13 years to go away.

You really want a guy back here that didn't want to be here already?

I think the main point I'd make on this is that TM hasn't built us so our window is next year, or even 3 years from now. We're still a "future" team, the difference between us before draft day and after is our future has been moved up a few years.

His major additions have been about the near future - Kane, O'Reilly, Bogosian - all are 25 or under, and the rest of the future will grow slightly behind them - and Risto, Pysyk, McCabe highlight how he has set our defense up to grow next year and beyond.

This all looks to me like good asset management that fits our plan - but the team's plan is to improve next year and build towards being a true contender in, say, 3.

I honestly think this is about fans' expectations becoming misaligned with the actual plan the team is executing on, and executing on well.

This. While I'd love for them to get a guy in here that would allow both Risto and Pysyk to play on the right I'm not about to do it at a high cost or bring in a guy just because either (aka Franson). It just doesn't make sense. I'd also like for McCabe to get one more year under his belt in Rochester as "The Guy" but I don't think it'll kill him to be here next year instead so long as he's getting playing time and not sitting in the press box for extended periods of time.

And if he comes in at or above his 4 mil cap hit it is bad money/asset management.

He didn't play like he wanted to be here and essentially quit on the team.

I have zero want or use for him here now.

And, I don't need / want a slow Dman like Franson here with a long contract.
