Honestly Michael, those GM make me
With all the whirlwind of offer sheet rumours going on before the draft, these GM should have done their own due dilligence and call Sweeney to see what was up. You just can't stand there and wait for deals to fall on your lap.

I'm pretty sure Treliving did, and Chia too.

I can understand that argument, but I also see the other side of things. The angry GMs didn't NEED Hamilton; they would have liked Hamilton, so they're naturally upset about being out of the loop. Should they have made a call? Maybe, sure. But Sweeney NEEDED to maximize return, as he was the guy dealing a #1 D. Onus was on him to maximize that return, and I'd just argue that he didn't do enough to make that happen.

i honestly didn't see those. but they were up against a time deadline as they wanted to get the deal done before this draft. they were also very hopeful that they'd be able to move up and get one of the stud D prospects. that obviously didn't materialize. he was up against it. he got what he thought was fair value and then tried to make a another deal with the picks. he didn't have the time to get it all done.

i think it's very easy for us to pick on him for not getting a huge return for a kid that wanted out last minute. and using the eye test Hamilton has a long way to go to warrant that return. he's got great offensive stats, great on the PP, blah blah.

he's weak in his own end and shies away from physical play. and he's huge. to me that needs to be addressed. not a huge fan of the Erik Karlsson's of the world.

Matt Beleskey signing might end up being similar to Chicago's Bryan Bickel deal.

I believe Bruins definitely overpaid and deserve only a B on this one.

I'm pretty sure making a trade does not happen in the wink of an eye. There is a lot of back and forth. It can take days and weeks. Imagine doing that with 29 other teams in 48 hours or so.
I guess he decided to concentrate on a few teams.

Also, what makes you think Hamilton didn't play a part in all that? Don't you think there were other places he didn't want to go? The guy had a lot of leverage here.

Where I would disagree with Sweeney is if he restricted his pool of trading partners to the Western Conference. But then, look a the trades made before and after the draft, only a minority happened between same Conference teams.

Anyhow, what is done is done. Let's see what happens with the 3 kids he got back.

It doesn't take a lot of time to send out an e-mail asking if anyone is interested in Dougie Hamilton. Simplifying things, obviously, but reaching out isn't difficult. And it would have allowed Sweeney to see what else was out there. Negotiating exclusively with a small handful of teams from the start leaves a whole lot of unknown.

I don't really agree that he had a lot of leverage. Boston didn't have to give teams the opportunity to speak with Hamilton. He had no NTC/NMC. He was an RFA needing a new deal. I don't see a ton of leverage there.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

I guess we'll have to!
One last thing, if I'm one interested GM and I can't talk to Hamilton, I'm not willing to give up much more than what would amount to an offer sheet compensation and certainly not an established player (Pretty much what Sweeney got from Calgary). What's the point of trading assets for a guy that seems willing to go to July 1st and see what kind of offer sheets are thrown at him.

Have a cold one and good luck to the Bolts!

Do you honestly believe that IF Hamilton was offered to every team around the league that the Flames offer was the best?

Do you know the circumstances around it? Were you there? All we can do speculate. For Boston fans the trade is done. It's happened. Nothing left to do but move on.

i think it's obvious that our Harvard graduate, 15 year NHL veteran, Providence Bruins GM and Boston Bruin assistant GM, general manager has no idea what he's doing.

Well one thing that isn't up to speculation is a highly prized young potential franchise d-man was traded for a mediocre return. Sure we can speculate as to why but given the fact lesser players of lesser valuable positions were traded for a better return sure points to a lack of offers being considered. If you want to believe there was a lack of potential partners then by all means keep on keeping on

When did I say that? For that matter when did anyone say that? Merely said you guys traded a highly marketable commodity at a premium position for a mediocre return. If that means your GM doesn't know what he's doing then so be it but given the fact he turned right around and made a very good deal for Lucic (for a better return mind you) I'd say the signs point to the Hamilton deal being crap.

You mean for a 22yr old top 2 right handed defenseman? Most likely very limited, but thats just a guess.

you forgot that doesn't play defense too good. you can look at at his stats, offensive, all you want. kids a project in his own zone. other teams know this. this isn't a sprouting Drew Doughty we're talking about.
