Most here would be against a 5 year deal. 3 is fine. Girgs and risto will not have huge cap hits in 3 years
- Khymlev13

Wouldn't shock me if at least one of them got the classic "lets skip the bridge deal so that your cap hit looks favourable 4 years from now" deal.

Most players are being smart and taking bridge deals.

It's why I'm amazed Nyquist signed for what he did

The reason why Oduya is so attractive is that 1) he doesn't cost any prospects and 2) We have oodles of cap space over the next 3 years. I am fine with overpaying him during that term. If we get him we are a playoff team next year and an elite team the year after that.
- Slump Buster

3-4 years is fine.

By then, Gorges, and Bogosian might be off the books and we only have 1 high priced D man (Risto)

He's scored plenty of goals last two years. His bridge deal would have probably been 2x4. Yet he signs for 5 years at 4.75 (I think)

Strange. He's probably planning on cashing in as a UFA at 29

Yea he's still young enough to the that 2nd opportunity to cash in. It's why Risto came to mind as a candidate to bypass that bridge deal if he's even better next year.

They are going to up there offer to Oduya, why I don't know.
- SABRES 89

perfect world, lock him up on a 2 year 12 mil total deal

solidifies top 4

allows pysyk to ease in for the next 2 years

also allows mccabe to develop a bit more

I actually like this

maybe mccabe makes the team as the 6th d man and a pp specialist

I am good with that

risto has done nothing to warrant a big money contract

IMO right now the only player we need to worry about paying is Kane

That's not the point of it, you're buying into potential so that you can save cap long term.

Can I just say that absolutely no one expects Foligno to be a top-6 player.

Therefore, absolutely no one expects too much of him.

So anyone who come flying in here using that as a basis for their counter-argument is not doing themselves any favors.

Some of us just don't think he is very good.

I personally think if you can send him the other way in a trade to get a valuable player, you do it.

I'm not going to say he has no place on the team, because he's still young (my earlier comments that he is a career AHL'er are premature, I admit). Therefore, I can't say that a Rochester guy should or could take his place and we'd get the same production/role but if he doesn't impress this year, then his job should absolutely be in jeopardy next year.

I said he should play in 70+ games, have 15-20 goals/40 points TOPS, and no that is not expecting too much from him. Notice I said TOPS, meaning I think that is his ceiling. If he puts up 12 goals and 25 points but plays smart, doesn't take dumb penalties, knows when and where to drop the gloves, and starts using his size better then I'd consider that a positive year. But he needs to become a consistent 30 point guy for him to have a place on this team, IMO, as a bottom 6 winger.

At this point, he's turning into Gaustad but a winger, so no upside in being great on the dot. I loathed Gaustad. That guy fell down more than a toddler.

As far a Oduya is concerned, let's move along. He's never been that good of a player and although I think we could use one more solid veteran or LHD, Oduya is not that guy, especially north of 4 million a year.

They are not going to get big deals at all, but they also won't be bargain priced like they are now.

You have $6.8M coming off the books after next season with Weber, Legwand, Johnson, and Colaiacovo. That doesn't include what they are going to do with two other UFA's in Foligno and McGinn.

The next year Gionta and McCormick account for $5.75M are gone.

The year after that is when things become a bit more tricky with Eichel becoming an RFA and Kane being a UFA.

The progress of the following group is going to be crucial going forward regarding the teams long term success related to the cap: Martin, Florentino, McCabe, Pysyk, Bailey, Baptiste, Olofsson, Karabacek, Carrier, Fasching.

If you don't sign Oduya, to me, you are taking a more patient approach for the D core, with a two pronged plan of attach for next offseason being something like Yandle as your big FA target and your top 5-7 pick being used on a high end D man.

Despite what many may think, I almost like that approach better than going big on Oduya for longer than 3 years.

DT, my entire point on Foligno is the only way he is getting you something of quality in return is if more is going the other way, and rather than sending what more would be the other way, meaning prospects and picks, I would rather keep him along with keeping the more it would take and just use Foligno in a properly defined role for perhaps the first time in a long time with actual quality players in the top 6-9 while the other quality prospects Buffalo has continue to develop as it seems they are.

Keep him as the 3rd LW.

Roll out a line of Foligno/Larsson/Reinhart
