Did ROR get Tarasenko money or did Tarasenko just land ROR money?
- Fols19

Tarasenko got Tarasenko money, ROR committed larceny.

That would be a long stretch.

Even longer than the current 7 year stretch the Avs have gone without going past the first round. To be fair though, they have qualified for the playoffs fewer times than the Blues in the that time span. Can't really blame a team for not advancing in the playoffs if they aren't in them.

Just need better compensation. Draft picks may not always be enough. When Shanahan got an offer sher from the Blues the arbitrator awarded NJ with Scott Stevens. Maybe they could do something like that.

Yeah cause small market teams in baseball never make the playoffs. Like last year, the Royals, A's, San Fransico and Pittsburgh. HUGE markets.

Tomburton99. The San Francisco Bay area is the 5th largest in the country, so yeah. It's a huge market.

The A's might not spend a lot of money, but they're in a massive market.

make cap a soft hit not hard..that would be baseball style.

- nascarguy

baseball luxury tax is the worst thing ever. It makes it even more difficult for the smaller markets to compete with the larger markets.

Leave it be. Get rid of the cap if you wanna make things interesting
- twpguy

Ya, that is a miserable idea. The entire point of the cap is to allow each team the same opportunity to be competitive. If the cap was removed, certain franchises ( Toronto, Montreal, New York Rangers) would simply "buy" their team. Where as Arizona, Dallas, etc. would have no possible way to keep up financially. Let's remember, this is a business. Having the same teams dominate the league year after year does nothing for the development of the NHL.

Yeah, awesome argument, when some teams require 15 million from taxpayers to minimize the loses but should be forced to spend 52 million on players..

What a terrible deal. Cap will be going down, not up. Hes getting paid top 5 in the league money and is not a top 5 player.

He is right there, with potential to climb even more.

A 7.5 cap hit isn't exactly top 5 money anymore either. This is not a crazy deal.

If ROR is worth 7.5mm, than Vova at 7.5mm is an absolute steal!

Offer sheets are a joke and the rules need to be put in check. The Vanek offer sheet Buffalo quickly signed was the beginning of the economic downturn for the Sabres. It is a dangerous tool which grossly inflates salaries and teams can use it as a vendetta (hence this blog and discussion)

You're absolutely right. History has shown that the cap will only go down and never up. Oh, except for the 9 out of 10 years since the cap has existed when it did actually go up and not down, the one year it kind of went down being the lockout shortened season.

So I guess you weren't right about the cap after all. But you're definitely right that a 23 year old, elite offensive talent doesn't deserve top 5 pay. Too bad you negated that by not doing any actual research and shooting your ignorant mouth off about him actually being paid like a top 5 player.

The following players have cap hits equal to or higher than Tarasenko:

Perry 8.625
Getzlaf 8.25
RoR 7.5 (after the coming season)
E. Staal 8.25
P. Kane 10.5
Toews 10.5
Spezza 7.5
Datsyuk 7.5
Parise 7.538
Suter 7.538
Subban 9
Weber 7.857
Nash 7.8
Lundqvist 8.5
Giroux 8.275
Malkin 9.5
Crosby 8.7
Kessel 8 (1.2 retained by TOR makes it 6.8 for PIT)
Stamkos 7.5 (due for a raise next season)
Ovechkin 9.538

Kopitar will likely get more after the coming season. Looks like he isn't even getting top 20 money if you actually use real numbers instead of just pulling poop out of your bum.

Also, taking into consideration that all the above deals except RoR's were signed in previous years with lower cap hits and some under previous CBAs and Tank's deal looks even better.

So this begs the following questions.

1 - Do you know what inflation is?
2 - Do you know how to count past 5?

Hint - you can use both of your hands and feet if you need some help

I'd rather see the following system:

ELC's increased to 4 years
Followed by 2 years where players have arbitration rights, and teams can walk away if they don't like the arb decision. The player would then be UFA.
All players UFA after 6 pro years or after their ELC ends if over age 28.

Two-time Norris trophy winner Erik Karlsson at 6.5M until 2018-19 is a steal of a deal for Ottawa after looking at these numbers. Tarasenko could easily become a similar bargain in the long run.
