Yea how about we let Chicago sign Saad to 3 year bridge deal at 3M so they can keep core together and when cap raises in 3 years they will give him 6M per. Thank god for offer sheets, it there wasn't for them, we would see many underpaid players on great teams, this way we see only many underpaid players on bad teams.

The salary cap was created to create an even playing field for teams. I REALLY like that because that is what it's all about; drafting, developing, and yes, the occasional SMART free agent signings.

I think offer sheets are fine but I think offer sheets throw off the market. Ryan O'Reilly is not a 7.5M no matter which way you slice it. He'll be an overpaid 2nd line center for 4 years ATLEAST. Look at Paul Statsny (not offer sheet related)

My favourite thing is that there's always gonna be a team that throws an offer sheet at a player every year.

Someone needs to offer sheet San Jose's Hertl next year just to send a big FU to that idiot Doug Wilson.

You forget that the offer sheet is more a tool to keep really good NHL players from being forced to sign a crap offer because the team can take the "sign with me for pennies on the dollar or don't play" mentality.

I personally wouldn't mind a small change to the compensation package as offer sheets are a little too extreme for most GMs (either the amount of money they deserve is too expensive pick wise or the fair value has a junk pick going to the other way making a match an easy choice.

How long before the McDavid and Eichel offer sheet talks start?

Just imagine if McDavid or Crosby had an expiring contract. That's where you would see some serious offer sheets out there. No point losing 4 first over a Dougie Hamilton or a Brandon Saad but no problem losing them over a franchise guy.

Problem is those guys never become an RFA for enough time to get offer sheeted

- willey101

Well it happened with Weber and they easily matched it. And that had massive bonuses for a budget team where the compensation was 4 really good picks.

McDavid is an Ontario boy. Him and Stamkos have talked about spending their careers in Toronto once they are UFA.

BOOK IT!!

Offer Sheets are just another tool in the negotiation process, or a pawn in the game of player management. Nowadays, it seems like GMs are too afraid to use them. There is a lot of talk and rumors about teams using them, but that is just a smoke screen to get a team to flinch first. Which a lot of players, teams, GMs, and fans can see right through.

I would use them. The $100k legal fees are nothing in today's sports world, and if used correctly losing $100k is the worst that can happen.

Wouldnt call 100k nothing. Issue is most GMs say go ahead and make an offer I'll just immediatly match, and most do. Essentially wasting 100k.

Vladdys deal is done 8 yrs 60 million.

I like the offer sheet. It's a shame we don't see teams employ it more often. I also think that the levels of compensation attached to them are very fair.

But we've seen a grand total of 8... Count them, 8, since the 04-05 lockout. And all but one of them, Penner in '07, has been matched.

If no one is going to use them, there is zero point to have them. They'll stay cause the NHLPA wants them there as they feel it gives them more leverage, because it does theoretically do so. But it's clear that there is some form of "gentleman's agreement" between GM's not to use them. That's collusion, and MLB owners got in trouble for that type of thing 30 years ago. I also get the feeling like the clubs throw one or two out there every few seasons to keep up appearances.

At this point, they're just for show.

Bingo they were a scam agreed upon during the last lockout. Owners get more favorable RFA status and players get offer sheets which never get used.

Never too early to start. I'm saying in three years the new Las Vegas team drops an offer sheet on Eichel and McJesus to make a splash.

The idea of a team drafting, developing a player just to have him stolen though is ridiculous. I like the compensation as is.
- willey101

I agree and it also sucks drafting and developing and losing players because you happen to develop too many good players and can't fit them under the cap

Since a team has to give up its own picks in the compensation, this isn't possible.
