massive multi-year contracts rarely get dealt on deadline day.
Affordable pending UFAs, on the other hand, do, and often go for a premium. |

So half the teams in the eastern conference playoffs are coming from one of the two divisions in the eastern conference?

Man I am gonna laugh when this roster over achieves this year and makes the playoffs....they are signing a lot of heart and soul type players who may bring it

yeah, but kessel and dion would have brought a much better return to contending teams and would have helped the leafs tank for mcdavid (which was way more important than getting a great return for those turds) |

since a trade didn't go down, despite the Leafs looking to make one, I'd argue this isn't true.
And given the way the team was playing, they really couldn't have done worse than they did. |

i think i would have taken less for kessel and dion way before the deadline, cause i'm sure as bad as things were with them, they would have been much worse without them
mcdavid was worth the effort to try that approach |

With Horachek, it honestly wouldn't have mattered. Kessel was almost a non-factor under him, and Phaneuf was still misused as a defense-first guy.
And again, a mid-season trade for a contract like that is very, very rare. |

i'm not disagreeing with you, although the fire sale should have included more than just kessel and dion
it should have included bozak, lupul, robidas and polak |

He scored more in Van than he ever did in Florida this past year. Perhaps he's better than when you had him. He was playing on a better team in Van though that's for sure. |

Unfortunately, there are only 3 salary retention slots; and the leafs have used 2.
3 of those last 4 guys are salary retention candidates .... but probably buyouts waiting to happen. |

Hard to comprehend thinking this signing is a bad move.
we let the guy net 15 goals or so in 60 games, and move him for a late 2nd at the deadline.
Leafs fans will have to put up with the "lucky to get a 3rd or 4th" BS much like the Winnik scenario. What did he bring back again? |

No more than trading away a starting goalie to ensure you finish last.
Oops.

Bottom Dwellers? I'll go with:
25. Florida
26. New Jersey
27. Edmonton
28. Carolina
29. Toronto
30. Arizona - xShoot4WarAmpsx
sweet, put the flyers at 20. not good enough to make the playoffs, not bad enough to get a top pick |

Sure they may overachieve and be in the playoff run! That only brings the value of the players up.......then you trade them at the trade deadline! You don't keep them so you can make the first round and lose! |

True....but why would a team pay 800k plus a pic or prospect for a player that couldn't be found with a microscope in the playoff loss to Calgary... There's a reason teams didn't snap him up right away - Bullfrog77
I love this stuff... so now the Canuck faithful want to blame Matthias for the playoff loss... ya a guy getting third line minutes was the reason for the loss. |
