That's a nice cap hit, should that have gone to a top 4 defenseman instead?
Especially after the Kessel trade.

Guess we will find out next season

I hope if Gonchar doesn't sign anywhere they find a position somewhere on the staff for him. He would be great for Malkin and Plotnikov to have around.

So... where can we find the specifics of these performance bonuses?

Probably won't come out until after the season, but if it's anything like Kevin Hayes deal last season he'd have to play everygame, win rookie of the year, and playoff MVP to get all of it. Unlikely, but no one would complain if he did, I'm sure.

Poor guy... he doesn't know injuries are a bit less on them video games, or at least reasonable injuries. Pretty sure NHL 2016 doesn't have a cancer, lupis, and plague disease setting.

Most likely... If its games played, he will not get all of it, its the Pens... points or specifics based on how good he plays is always really sketchy.

He saw it as the easiest route into the NHL on a competitive team. Let's be honest, he doesn't have that many players to beat out to earn a spot with the big club.

11.0 Entry Level Contract
Players who qualify in the entry-level system, also known as "Group 1" players, must sign contracts with strict limits on term and compensation.

Players younger than 25 as of Sept. 15 in the calendar year their first NHL contract is signed are subject to the terms of Article 9 of the CBA and must sign an entry-level contract. This means the amount of salary and team-paid performance bonuses is capped, depending on his draft year or the year he signs. The length of entry level contract is also based on the player's age.

All entry level contracts are two-way contracts and can be extended by as many as two seasons with the maximum allowable salaries for players selected in each entry draft up until 2022 is $925,000.

Entry level contracts can contain two types of bonuses: signing bonuses and performance bonuses.

SIGNING BONUSES cannot exceed 10 percent of the contract's total compensation & paid out annually.
PERFORMANCE BONUSES cannot exceed $2,850,000.
Performance bonuses can be broken up into 2 categories:

SCHEDULE A BONUSES cannot exceed $212,500 per individual bonus & $850,000 in aggregate.
SCHEDULE B BONUSES are paid by the league & are not captured within the actual entry-level contract signed by the player, & do not count against the team's salary cap.
CBA REFERENCE: Section 5 (Document Pages: 326-331).

- nh4442

1: Individual "A" Bonuses - These are broken into categories like ice time, goals, and plus/minus. Each category has a minimum requirement a team can bonus for (10 goals, for example) and each category may not create more than $215,00 worth of bonuses (you can bonus $100K at 10 goals and then $115K at 15 goals if you want). Total "A" Bonuses can't exceed $850,000.

2: Individual "B" Bonuses - This is kind of a two-part bonus system based on performance comparative to the rest of the league. First off, the league itself will pay the player a bonus outside of his Club-paid salary if he does things like earns a place in the top five for postseason awards like the Hart, Selke, or Vezina; or if he places top ten in the league in offensive/goaltending categories. On top of the league bonuses, the club can pay bonuses of up to $2M to the player for making these awards.

Basically, for a guy like Plotnikov, he likely won't reach any individual B bonuses which is $2M of his bonuses, and he might reach some of the individual A bonuses but it's tough. Kevin Hayes signed similar bonuses and didn't earn a single one I believe.

This is how I see the line combos...

Perron Crosby Hornqvist

Plotnikov Malkin Kessel

Kunitz Sutter Bennett

Dupuis Sundqvist Rust

What do you guys think? Knocking on wood that everyone can stay healthy

If Kessel is really working out with Gary Roberts I think its safe to say he'll probably top 40gs and 90pts playing with Malkin or Crosby

Also your power play is going to be ridiculous. So many weapons with Crosby down low, Kessel playing the half boards on the opposite side, Letang and Malkin on the point and whoever wants to have a career year standing in front of the net.

Plotnikov should be a fan fav poop disturber if his game translates. He's a giant piece of poop in the K that you love to have on your team. Cap hit seems way too high, but goodluck to him. Matt Cooke replacement to be honest.

925K is a high cap hit... with the likely bonus of only 800K max... so... 1.725K max for a 2nd-3rd line winger.

Ummm... right

And your opinion of him as a player changes the cap hit for line position value how?

2nd or 3rd line winger at ~1.725 doesn't seem to high for any team.

I think he is implying that Plot isn't close to top 6 caliber. Best to wait and see where he fits in to give an opinion.

Sort of, but he also threw out the cap hit being too high... If he is a 3rd line player, thats quite a fair cap hit. If he falls to 4th line duties, then its bad.

If he doesn't even make the team, then he gets no bonuses, and who gives a poop.

He's a great potential fourth line edition. That's the point. He's one of many who took more money to be in a top-6 role in the KHL who now see a chance to get a 4th line role of guaranteed money in the NHL. It's a smart move for both sides especially now that many of the grinders in the K aren't getting paid, the barrier is falling.

plot is a sound acquisition at a reasonable cap hit with the bonus overages who provides depth without costing player pick resources. boom or bust. if he is cooke 2.0 then great... he was a great 3rd liner who could chip in offensively. considering he is one of 4 players with legit shots of earning a top 6 role, one of two left --- sid-geno-horny-kessel are cemented--- perron duper kunitz ploti trying for the other two. If he ends up on the third it will be with decent linemates.
