Agreed. I think Hextall will manage the cap better. Though they will still be at the cap ceiling. Just better usage of the money.

Can't really slot Provorov in until you see how he looks against NHL competition. For he or Sanheim to make the roster, they are going to have to significantly outplay the vets. Same goes for Ghost and Morin and any of the other kids.
- BiggE

I understand that.....just wishful thinking....all the scouts seem to think he is NHL ready and will eventually become elite.

I'd say the chances of Provorov/Sanheim/Morin/Ghost outplaying the vets in camp are about 60/40.....competition isnt very stiff so....

"I'm comfortable with our team right now," he said. "If we can upgrade it somehow, we'll look to do it, but we can't be going out and spending a whole bunch of money to upgrade it, otherwise we'll be back in the situation we're in."

Sure sounds like Hextall will be a lot more prudent in terms of cap management.

Which isnt saying much....I mean when I put together the Flyers top 6 d-man rotation in my head....I leave Amac off the list.....I would like to see this if we cant acquire anyone else this summer.

Schultz-Streit
MDZ-Medvedev
Provorov-Gudas

Provorov making it?
Can't see Hextall rushing anyone, ghost probably makes it being 22 ahead of him.but it is tempting from our standpoint, with his speed, & creativity.

Not really rushing him if he is clearly capable of playing in the NHL. That would be holding him back. Victor Hedman was capable at a very young age and he eventually formed into what he is today. I say if the kid has it....he has it.....so we'll see

It is tempting, with his speed, & creativity a dimension we're missing with the exception of MDZ.

Snider will raise his next cup, if he can hold out until he's about 85.

Yeah, that's pushing it, (we'll look like Anaheim).

The Flyers signed Medvedev for 3M on a low risk one year deal. They view him as a top 4 caliber defenseman, although sometimes there can be an adjustment that needs to be made to the NA game. They spent extra money this year to sign Neuvirth, which was a good signing. The Flyers have about 4.45M in cap space right now. If they had wanted to, they could've bought out Gagner, possibly traded Luke Schenn, which could've meant taking a contract back, or retaining salary, but also could've gained more space. They could've bought out Umberger or Lecavalier to gain more space. If they had wanted to, they could've dove in head first in to the free agent pool. The bottom line is that the Flyers have signed free agents that they think will improve the team, will retain all the players they're interested in keeping, and will probably for the first time in a while will be under the cap and banking cap space. The Flyers are in decent cap shape, and yes, just like every year, their cap situation is overblown.

Dunno... problem with him is he can't seem to get the same # of shots off that he did during that brief time he was a 50pt player... his SH% has been pretty constant, even last season wasn't bad (9-10%). He'd need to get off 200-250 shots to be able to get in the 40-50pt range (or over 3 per game)... in Columbus he declined to just 2 per game, and last season he barely got up to 1.5.
- Tomahawk

Having a major core injury can affect a players quickness and ability to skate well, which can in turn affect the number of shots a player can generate. We have to see if he can get some strength back and recover, otherwise, he's done.

I'd like to think that Umberger bounces back. He's not that old – 33. Decent size and his speed should be a bit more effective assuming his hernia issues are sorted. Is he overpaid? Of course. With the right mix of players he could get back to 20g/50pts.
- Pixote Andolini

do you really believe that? what has he done in the last few years to even warrant that type of prediction?

Listening to the NHL network on XM, they explain there are teams that are budget teams and teams that are cap teams. The flyers are a cap team, who will always be right at the cap limit. You can argue they could have better players for the money they spend, but they will never be a team that has a large amount of extra cap space sotting around.
- funmaster18

Stated that a number of times. Flyers are a cap team because they choose to be.

No doubt, and I'm fine with that philosophy. However, no matter how anyone spins it, there is nothing good about having 14.1 million cap dollars tied up in Vinny, Umberger and AMac.
- BiggE

Lecavalier and Umberger are a different situation from MacDonald in my opinion. MacDonald is slightly overpaid, but he is not a player whose career may be pretty much over as an effective player. Despite the narrative, MacDonald is a solid top 4 NHL defenseman.

We agree here, AMac is overpaid, but a serviceable defenseman.

Yeah I'm well aware of that. My issue isn't with the Flyers spending money. Why would it be? It's spending boatloads of cash on marginal players is what the problem is.
- PLindbergh31

That appears to be a problem of the past. Unfortunately it will take some time to get out from under that old methodology.

Hated the Hamilton trade and subsequent picks. Liked the Lucic trade. They got Belesky on a better deal than expected

Thaat Hamilton trade is still a head scratcher. There's no way that was the best deal available.
