Not so sure I want the Sabres to play/pay on the first day of FA. Most players get over paid. Not sure any of these FA guys have drastic impact on the team.

Listen I like Pommer and out of all the guys that have been moved out, he was the one I'd have liked to see stay.

He and Hossa are not close to the same player IMO.

Pommer is a very poor man's Hossa.

- dadeadhead

All I said was his numbers are extremely similar to Hossa's over the last 4 years...Pommer has 9 less points and 6 less goals over the last 4 years. Nothing more nothing less.

And again

Hossa 32-36
Pommer 28-32

Hossa is doing it past the typical prime
Pommer just left the typical prime

If Pommer is still doing it over the next 4 years then I'll agree. But not until then. You've already seen a 12 goal drop in Pommer's production over the last 2.

We have three third rounders, only 1 second.

I thought I had read one of the reporter guys said we had a plethora of 2nds next year. Maybe I was wrong.

Yes, if you go to the page for PIT there's one that says VAN*. If you click on it it says: Pittsburgh will receive the higher selection of 2016 NYI 3 and 2016 VAN 3.

Jones current RFA and 25yrs old

Lehner 23 (24 days shy of 24) has two years left on his deal and is still and rfa after that.

Yeah not bad . Not great either but not bad.

That's true, and here's an excerpt from an NHL.com Dan Rosen article

"Chiarelli targeted Robin Lehner, who was traded by Ottawa to the Buffalo Sabres on Friday. Chiarelli turned his attention to Talbot on Saturday because he was impressed by his performance this season when Henrik Lundqvist was injured."

So maybe we had to give up our first to get him

The difference is can Pommer be like Hossa come playoff time?

I'm not sure he can.

- dadeadhead

Solely because I was curious...

Playoffs comparison between the two.

Hossa - 194 games - 144 pts = .742 PPG
Pommer - 70 games - 43 pts = .614 PPG

Lehner has proven to be a good enough goalie in this league to win a Calder... Jones is no where near that in his career 34 career games played and 16 wins.

I think it was a case of the only way he was willing to trade him in division was for a 1st and we had to take Legwand. Murray did say as much on the Legwand front.

Elder Murray wanted him out West but I doubt Edmonton was moving 16 for him.

I agree with the sentiment about still having to consider the lottery. Aside from landing a top line winger, I would really prefer just to go after a dman or two in free agency, unless they are trading for a hamilton type defenseman.

I would say though i think if the team gels quickly and can at least smell the playoffs come TD, they shouldnt be adverted from adding a piece or two as long as it doesnt include the 1st rounder. The three 3rd round picks help, along with murrays own two draft classes being another year closer to contributing somewhere in the organization.

Also, i wonder if martin is even an option they are looking at if he prefers playing his off side. Or is it strictly about handedness?

GWG

Hossa 12
Pommer 4

PP goals

Hossa 18
Pommer 2

SHG

Hossa 2
Pommer 1 (10 years ago and what a goal it was)

TOI

Hossa 19:18
Pommer 16:22

Defensively Hossa by a wide margin.

Puck control I'd say Hossa by a wide margin.

I'm really confused by this. Yeah Lehner got hot and won a Calder Cup but Jones' AHL stats are ridiculously good. They are both crap shoots but Lehner is more valuable with his age/contract status.

We got a younger goalie, still with term, who has a bigger nhl sample size. Plus the Sharks finished in the bottom ten last year. I'll take Lerner over jones anyway, and we gave less.
