i dunno. color me glad the pens didn't give up Maatta or Pouliot.
If Saad truly wants 6.5, then he isn't a special asset anymore. It'd be like signing a free agent, plus giving up stuff for him.
Maatta and Pouliot are still super cheap and have years left being super cheap.
Saad is better than both Maatta and Pouliot, but both Maatta and Pouliot are *more valuable* than Saad.
In a year when Maatta's asking for 6.5 as well, Maatta for Saad will make more sense.
Nothing is more overrated by sports fans than youth that is also expensive.
If Maatta or Pouliot are dealt, it MUST either be straight up for another young CHEAP star, OR for a great expensive player, but with scuderi going the other way as well. Otherwise, the Pens lose the deal even if they get the best player. - poopmouth
That's exactly how I feel too. Good ELC players are gold. Bowman knows this, which is why he tries to get as many as he can on his roster. Pens never learn this and keep giving theirs away. Or at least trying to. |

WOW get out of bed & find out the biggest RFA got TRADED!!!!!!!!!! Blue Jackets - hmmmmmmmmmm, Dubinsky is going to be an even bigger pain in the arse!
Nice, Semin bought out - now the fighting on here can stop. That's a good thing. Wonder if Pittsburgh is where he wants to be?
So, Bowman not so good, JR being patient or being hog tied is good! Hawks fans bleeding a little this morning - might reduce their ego a little considering Saad wasn't a cap problem per say, so a player or 2 more will be leaving the nest. This will test the scouts they have with the players they traded for - time will tell. Strange they wanted Morin back???
Haven't read the comments, any Pens signatures put down from out RFA's or UFA's?
Edit: Can't help myself, but there's going to be Semin stories all over the place without a DP mentioned! |

Yeah, but it gets a lot more difficult for them now with the big 2 making 21M combined - cap1681
Only short term.
The strategy remains the same. Eventually it doesn't work but patience is everything.
Set a plan. Stick to the plan. Don't deviate and react based on the team itself. Regular season results are a way better indicator of what your team is than playoff ones. When you start basing your decisions based on a stretch of 7 or 14 games in the postseason, things fall apart in an awful big way. |

If Pouliot didn't turn out for CHI it would be a bad trade for them too. That's why they got multiple prospects back. Anisimov is versatile and can play C or W now. I'm not devastated by this at all. - jfkst1
Tropp and Morin scored 3 goals combined last year and will be 26 and 24 when the season starts. I don't know if I'd call them prospects |

I'm still in too much shock to determine if I'd be happy if that deal went through or not in the long run, especially factoring in the alleged contract he wants of 6 mil+ (have to assume such information JR knew if he made the offer)... but I can say without a doubt I believe that to be a better deal than what the blue jackets offered. |

Hartnell is past his prime, Duby is ok... more of a pain in the backside then anything else... but yes they are better |

Oh definitely.
Which is why it's good you didn't get him.
Saad at less than $6 million is a special player.
At $5.5+ he's just solid.

To follow up my last comment. It seems like the Penguins were the first to engage the Hawks today about Saad and for most of the day the Pens were expecting to get the deal done. However the jackets came in and was able to give the hawks more of what the hawks were looking for.
Tough break for the Pens. Seems like they thought they had him. My friend doesn't know what this will do to their plans for tomorrow. |

Should of clarified "varying degrees of skill"....but that is a nasty "hard to play against" roster.
One would think CBJ would be quite interested in the Rychel-Harrington swap. |

Hopefully Bowman made a poor projection and misses on the trade. I'm not disappointed at all in still having Pouliot and Kapanen. - jfkst1
I can get behind this. Everyone loves Saad, but that might have been worse than the proposed Kessel trade. |

Non-speculatory Swings and Misses so far:
Artemi Panarin
Mike Rielly
Brandon Saad
I'm glad we are trying but at some point you gotta win one of these |

#3 in a competition between 2 teams for the most part for Reilly... was that really a miss or just a lot of wishful thinking for us. |
