Since the Leafs, rightly, aren't going to do anything, I'll throw out this idea I saw somewhere in the last few days. Go out and sign biggest name on the market, say Mike Green, to a one-year, $9M contract. Let him know that you intend to trade him to a contender at the TDL and that you will retain half his salary.

This only works if you've gutted the team enough that there is no chance of being in a playoff hunt. (We should be safe on that front.). This isn't a real suggestion but is kind of a cool variation on the Winnik type deal.

I had this strange dream last night that the Leafs signed Franson, Santorelli, Winnik and Belesky, Kessel got all trained up with Roberts, Bernier had a bounceback year, while Reimer was right on his heels in a contract year, with Babcock leading the Leafs into the playoffs that were void of the Big Bad Bruins...

Maybe. But maybe making $9M with a chance of playing on a contender might be appealing. The biggest problem is that it's just such a weak FA year that a guy like Green might not want to re-enter next year which is presumably stronger.
