IMO, he always looked his best when he had a defense-first guy to play with... Aulie, Schenn, Kostka, healthy Gunnarsson... but when he's relied on to be the defensive consciousness of his pairing, that's not a good thing.

There is absolutely no reason any coach should be giving Phaneuf shut-down duty. He's an offense-first guy.

IMO, the best Franny ever looked as a Leaf is when he was paired with Mark Fraser the lockout year. They clicked well together and had a decent +/- if I remember correctly.

Yup. I agree, whats interesting though, is after Fraser went down, Franson played the most minutes on the Leafs in game 6 and 7, he scored goals and was the best d man by far on the club. He's an anomaly. Franson is good when he can get his first pass going, thats why he and Dion worked, they weren't spending time in their end. After the RC firing, the forwards stopped caring, there was hardly an option to go to. Franson has his faults, but he has shown glimpses of goodness... I wouldn't pay him 6 per but...

after Rc, they just stopped caring at all, you could even hear JVR during the broadcasts yelling for a pass from centre... As a righty who hits a lot and is a good PP guy, I'd pay him 4 times 6 years, or 5 times 4 years, or 6 times 2 years. Anything else no thanks, not worth it...

Marner has said Hunter and co. expect him to be a centre at the NHL level.

These Franson rumours have to be bull poop.

Just think of the PR and media poop storm. Anyone think Shanny, Dubas and Hunter want to deal with that? For all their talk of "culture change" and "scorched earth," bringing Franson back contradicts that.
