I like keeping Gagner. If he doesn't pan out, he's gone in a year. If he does, he's young enough to be a piece moving forward, or as a trade chip. Either way, I'm happy he's stivking
Cut from the same cloth as acting a little impulsively rather than looking at a 5 year plan. I think Hextall has more an eye to the future as well as the present then some of the previous GMs. - J35Bacher
When and if the Flyers get to the point of being a contender, then what will his approach be?
Me neither, but I wish it would happen.
works for the NFL.
And the 2 draftee thing is well and good, but don't they have agreement with those junior governing bodies? they aren't going to be happy about that. - nails
$$ changes everything.
Maybe some agreement where, if you take one of the 18/19 year olds and play him in the AHL, you are obligated to pay his junior team his NHL base salary for that season.
It is completely different. The styles are not even remotely close.
Hextall is building through youth, and saving cap space for the future.
Is that the same thing Holmgren did?
Not saying Holmgren didnt do a good job at turning the team around early on, but they are on totally different ends of the spectrum at this point. - jak521
Things have changed since then. Top defenseman such as Timonen, just aren't available anymore. A GM has to adapt to the league. I wouldn't expect their styles to be the same, and that wasn't really the point. The point is that things change over time, hard to compare a GM who has been at the post for a year, versus a GM that was at the post for how many years, in a different era?

So if one of our free agents suffer a brutal injury. One of them has an all-star season, or one of them flat out sucks? Way to many variable to be sure of how easy-hard it would be to resign them.
Perfect example. We sign MDZ to a one year deal. He puts up 45 points next season. Is he an easy sign? Doubt it. - jak521
Sure it's still easy. Just have to pay what the market demands for the player. If a player suffers a brutal injury, why would you want to re-sign him? Or if he sucks. The you get someone else. Not a big deal.
The Sweeney family must've put on their rally caps, because that isn't bad at all for a goalie who everyone knows wasn't going to be your No. 1 - AllInForFlyers
He just turned up more for Lucic than he did for Hamilton. That may temper the rally a bit.

Oh, by all means, it's still net negative because the Hamilton deal is so damn brutal, but I can acknowledge that cashing in Martin Jones for that return is pretty good

The decision to trade Hamilton by itself is very questionable. With the premium on good defenseman in the league today, to not get more then they did, is really a bad deal.
