Gostisbehere is coming off a serious injury where he missed most of last season. How realistic is it for him to make the jump? With the makeup of the Flyers defense, the most likely opening would be on the 3rd pair, which would be a fit for the kind of player that Morin is. I personally don't see any of them making it, which is fine. Over develop and bring them up when they're sure they are ready.

2-3 years.. Either I am okay with.

Defense is one position you want to have security and actual depth.

3/7 of our defense going into next season are going to be free agents at the end of the year. If we sign MDZ to a 1 year deal, that makes it 4/7. Thats not a very ideal situation. The year after that Streit and Schultz are both free agents. So as of now, a 2 year deal would be ideal. 3 years really wouldnt be the end of the world seeing how we only have 1 guy currently on the team and signed through there, and that guy is Andrew MacDonald.

How hard would it be to re-sign any of those pending free agent defenseman?

He's gotta put some muscle on that frame as well. It's all well and good to be undersized, but too an extent. At 5'10, 160lbs he'd get bullied by guys like gaudreau, kane, st Louis, Atkinson, etc.

I am basing it off that Gostisbehre is coming of a torn ACL and will probably need some time in AHL.

Didn't Ghost use his down time to transform his body or something? He may have lost a year on the ice, but that didn't stop him from making leaps forward in other ways.

If we need to, we can replace Schenn/Schultz with (in my opinion) better players via UFA for better or the same price (generally speaking, no names to go off of). Gudas will still be an RFA. Medvedev is a wild card as is Manning. There's 4 (2 UFA, Gudas, Amac). I'd hope 2 younger guys are in by then.

Flyers keeping Gagner makes me believe they found another way to clear cap space
- Winning

or they don't care because they don't have to.
they can do everything they need to with the 6.7M they have left.
then just wait vinny out.

I think I read that he spent that down time adding upper body muscle mass. I'd prefer him to have played all year, but he put his time to good use.

I kind of see that happening too. Provorov will be interesting as almost everyone says he is NHL ready. Still think another dman is moved once teams miss on FA targets.

But Hextall could surprise us all. We have already seen he isn't cut from the same cloth as previous Flyer GMs

- J35Bacher

I'm getting dejavu. I remember when Holmgren first took over and he made the moves he made, such as adding Timonen and Hartenll and moving the Flyers from a last overall team, to a playoff team to ECF to the SCF. He was well thought of. Not sure where this his isn't cut from the same mold is coming from. He had a good few days. Holmgren had plenty of good days himself. Let's see what happens long term.

Altough I would rather keep DZ and not Schenn.
I still think Schenn is the most moveable piece out of him, Vinny, and RJ.

- nails

Other than Streit and the recently signed Medvedev, who I can't make a judgment on, there's not a single Philly D-man I would argue we need to keep over another. Del Zotto just doesn't have a contract.

The trade market seem wild to anyone else? The return on supposed value is all over this off season.

He probably did work out a lot and build some muscle. But he also didn't play. One of the main things they wanted from him was playing better without the puck. It's something hard to do when your not in a game situation.

No one ever questions his offensive instincts. It's the playing without the puck side and defensive side they wanted improvement in.

That's how I view MDZ. Which is why I don't want anything past 2 years.

It takes considerable time to fully recover from a serious knee injury. Sometimes as much as a full calendar year.

Right. But MDZ is basically an offensive defenseman who plays...let's say "somewhat passable" defensive hockey. I'm hoping that Ghost can start to evolve into him after 2 years. And really, having more than 1 of those types of players is not ideal. So why not sign him for 2 years, and then evaluate where you are with him as well as Ghost/Provorov/etc. and go from there, as opposed to locking yourself in for 3+ years?
