Maybe not this year, but what about in 2-3 years? How about Sanheim or Provorov in 2-3 years? - jmatchett383
Exactly.. so why would MDZ be a bad signing for the next 2-3 seasons?

I didn't see anything last season that would suggest Ghost is ready. - SuperSchennBros
i didn't say he is. Pretty sure I said 16/17. |

It's not like we cannot have Del Zotto until he's 27-28 and dump him. The Flyers have nothing but time in terms of developing Travis Sanheim for example. - SuperSchennBros
So you're absolutely positive that, in MDZ falls off a cliff or simply regresses (possible, agreed?) that we'll be able to move him easily for a good/decent return 2 summers from now? |

my impression of this year for him was one where he learned how to play correctly again.
regardless of what I think of Berube, he did bench the guy for quite a few games.
He is a fine puck move and skater. I just don't know that I trust him as an actual D man. I am not an advanced stat guy, so maybe those will bare that out.
I also don't think you need more than one guy like MDZ on a team and I get the impression that Ghost is the next MDZ. If Ghost is ready next year (16-17) then you don;t need DZ.
If Hexy wants to sign him longer than 2 years, I am fine with it if it is without a movement clause. - nails

Even if Ghost is ready for 16-17, what does the front office do about 15-16? Don't they have a obligation to remain competitive? You know the Philly fans and media will hold them to that standard. I'm sure the owner will as well. You sign MDZ to a year (or two) because he's good player, under team control, and is relatively cheap. If he's expendable after 1 year into his 2 year deal, he can likely be traded for a decent return. If Ghost ends up flopping or needing another year after a serious injury, MDZ is there at your service. |

Because I don't want a guy being paid $3M in 3 years if we have 1-2 guys who can do the same at 1/2 price in 2-3 years. |

This year's compensation for offer sheets
AVERAGE ANNUAL VALUE COMPENSATION
Less than $1,205,377 Nothing
$1,205,377-to-$1,826,328 Third-round pick
$1,826,328-to-$3,652,659 Second-round pick
$3,652,659-to-$5,478,986 First and third-round picks
$5,478,986-to-$7,305,316 First, second and third-round picks
$7,305,316-to-$9,131,645 Two firsts, a second and third-round picks
$9,131,645 or greater Four first-round picks
The question comes if a team offer sheets MDZ right below 3.6 mil |

I think the original argument was 4 years at like 4M per.
I could deal with 2 years just fine personally...not at 4 per though |

So I was thinking with this debate on "we have younger players ready so why sign vets on d thing".
I see only Morin as really a chance to make the big club.
I believe Gostisbehre will need some time due to the knee injury.
Hagg they wanted to see become more consistant and engaged more so I think he starts in the AHL too.
Alt had an injury season so I would expect him in the AHL to start. Probably on the top pair.
Sanheim probably back to juniors unless he is incredible. They have said they want him to get a chance at the WJC.
Now this could all change if they play incredible. But realistically I only see Morin having a legit chance to start the season. And when it comes time to bring someone up, teams are always needing defenseman during the season or for the playoffs at the TDL. Right now the only defenseman we have that might be hard to move is MacDonald.
So after that long ramble, my point is even if they sign Del Zotto to something like 3 years @ 3.5, I don't think we will be blocking anyone. |

He has 2 years to do so, the way I'd see it. Sign MDZ for 2 years, then re-evaluate. |

I agree that only Morin has a good chance to start this season. But I'm looking at next season and 17/18 as well. Not sure if I like paying a guy $3.5M if we are banking on 1-2 younger guys giving us (hopefully) similar production for a fraction of the price. |

We're going to be shedding salary the next couple of seasons but until then we're still going to need a half decent roster. |

The argument is that I don't think he should be signed for more than 2 (or, "a couple") of years. After that, depending on his production and the development of some of our younger players, re-evaluate. |
