I'd imagine if you aren't bringing Zid back they will look for a RHD. Mihalek shouldn't be too expensive and is 32. Or you can get real nutty and bring in defenseman supreme Pete Harrold. |

Zajac? And his contract that doesn't end until sometime next decade? - smellmyfinger
Fun fact: The Devils and Red Wings are 29th and 30th, respectively, in total trades completed over the last 10 years. No other organization is even close.
If they actually traded with each other, the universe might collapse in on itself. |

Read that last year when you gave up a third for Zid it was the first trade Lou and Holland ever made with each other. Mind blowing that they had a combined 46 years as GMs of their team and never did so much as swap picks at a draft. |

I'm with the others.. no one. Holland might trade next years 2nd and 3rd before the days over though. He does love losing those. |

That's crazy. But, hey, its kind of worked for what its worth.. both teams were the two power houses out of each conference since 1995. |

They drafted much better in the mid to late rounds which is why they are still successful. The thing that could derail them is the cap recaptures on Franzen and Zetterberg if they retire before the contracts are up. Got to love the NHL make up the rules as you go. |

I think the loyalty that Holland shows to his players will be good leverage in pulling a Pronger/Savard for Franzen for his contract length.. Zeke will play it out, I think, even if dropping minutes. With Larkin and the new Russian dude.. not too mention Sheahan, you have a slew of good-great 1b Cs/2Cs to take the pressure off beardy mcbearden.

Anyone remember when Detroit Redwings fans where singing from the rooftops about how great a signing Wiess was and Yelling "Good Riddance" to Filppula? Yeah, me too, good times eh? - Artyukhin76
not at all,
i for one never yelled "good riddance" i wasnt heartbroken thats for sure, but he was a decent player, you guys are getting more out of him than we did thats for sure
i actually was upset we didnt trade him prior to that years deadline, because i knew we werent keeping him and would have preferred to get something/anything for him before he walked.
i felt indifferent at the time, i knew weiss was decent (obviously not now) but i thought filp was decent, so i assumed holland made a good decision (obviously not now)
but no, i dont think many fans were ecstatic about letting filp go, nor were there many fans ecstatic to get weiss |

The Lightning thread was berated with trolling about how much better Weiss was, how Filppula wasn't worth it and Weiss was. |

Im being honest, you guys obviously got the better player in filp, but i truly dont remember a ton of fans living in rejoice that we got weiss, it was kind of a "meh, why did we do that if theyre both basically decent and they wanted identical contracts?" |

I guess we'll have to see if KH does anything with the cap space he created with this buyout.
Honestly I'm not thrilled about the buyout. I don't think Weiss got a fair chance last season despite showing that he was likely capable of a lot more.
Stephen Weiss put up nearly half a point per game last season despite playing less than 11 and a half minutes per night, with a rotating cast of less-than-stellar linemates (four most common partners: Sheahan, Pulkkinen, Glendening, and Andersson).
In terms of points scored per 60 minutes of even-strength ice time, Weiss was actually second on the entire roster at 2.01, behind Datsyuk (2.13) and a shade above Tatar (2.00). And it's not like he was riding flukey percentages to get there, either -- the team converted just 8.37 percent of their shots with Weiss on the ice, which is a little above league average for even strength play but by no means exceptional.
Now if the Wings have a big move planned (ha!) which requires the cap space to be made available now, then that makes a difference. But if all they're going to do is re-sign their RFAs and make a spot for Ferraro, then I don't see what the point of buying out Weiss now is. At the very least, I think Weiss should have been given one more year. Then if it's still not working out, you can buy him out then and save yourself an extra year of cap commitment to boot. |

I was not thrilled at all about Weiss coming in at 5 years / 5 mil per season. Too much money and too long in term. He had just come off a major wrist injury and was unproven he could continue to put up big numbers like he did in Florida after the injury.
However, I also didn't think Filppula was worth anything close to 5 million... more like 3.5 - 4 million tops since he'd NEVER SHOOT THE FREAKIN' PUCK !! But he was a nice complementary piece to the Wings and a very good two-way player and good penalty killer too. The Weiss signing is going to go down as one of Holland's worst contracts. Overall, pretty much agree with Digitalbath... most of us were kind of indifferent.
I'm not sad at all to see Weiss get bought out. He's somewhat injury prone and at a minimum it opens up a roster spot for one of the young guns. However, I'd be interested to see Holland go out and get a serious impact player NOW for a fair price (won't hold my breath). |

I think wingz4life is basically the worst in terms of spouting off bullpoop opinions to piss people off without any real facts to ever back up anything. |
