DAL signs Niemi three years, $4.5M AAV.

Yeah I wasn't paying Niemi more than $4 million

- Stripes77

They now have $10.5M of their cap locked up in goalies.

I'm not discounting his skill, he can certainly score goals
He's just not a winner
Dude pretty much quit the last half of last year
There's just WAY too many negatives with him

- jdfitz77

Proper coaching can change a lot of that. Look at Ovechkin for example.

His lack of back checking has been noted time and time again. Trotz gets there and he turned Ovi into a much more complete player...

Maybe Lehtonen goes on unconditional waivers tomorrow? Just shy of 3M for the next 6 years if they do

I don't think we get to be that. They might be our biggest rival but I would think Montreal would be their biggest. But I could be wrong, where are the Toronto commenters when we need their opinions?

That being said, trading with them wouldn't be easy

- Zschalberg

Those Canadians... They're stealing our thunder...

I've got a feeling Sekera ends up back in LA. They seem set on making it work with him.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here...

It could be that they want to move him to help speed things along in terms of rebuilding the team. He's going to get a nice chunk for them to work with back in return. He's their most valuable player, whether you want to believe it or not. That means that he's going to get the most back in a trade.

It's no different than us trading Vanek, Pommer or Miller when they were moved.

- HonkFortheGoose

It's much different
Most notably, he's locked up long term. Not about to be UFA like the guys we traded.
Also,
If he was going to back back some nice young assets or high picks, don't u think that would've happened at the Draft?
Makes me think there are teams out there that really want him.
Or at least they aren't willing to pay a premium price.

So the Leafs are gonna have to keep a chunk of salary, and not get full value for him...
U don't make that kind f trade unless u want the player gone
At this point,
Seems like they're just gonna take what they can get

If they liked him, he's a guy they'd build around

You don't build around wingers...Shanny knows it Babcock knows it. That's why they are moving him.

I don't remember where I read this today but apparently the Oilers turned their attention to Talbot on Saturday after missing out on Lehner
- mattmoulson

Right - the belief is that they had an offer that was better than our 31.

I don't know. Nill said after they made the trade for Niemi's rights they plan on going with both and having them push each other this year.

Not to mention who their coach is.

Lindy was always well known for rotating his goalies consistently and fairly, correct?

Remember, they don't want him on THEIR TEAM. That doesn't mean he won't do well elsewhere. I don't even want the guy but just because Babcock and Shannahan don't want him on the Leafs doesn't make him redundent.
- sambarugh

I'm not saying he sucks, I just don't want him here
Just like Shanny & Babcock don't want him
It's very significant to me that two gret hockey minds want him gone

Also, there obv isn't anyone out there that really wants him or a deal would've happened by now

His contract is a big reason he isn't moved yet. A team like the Pens would take him in a heartbeat, they just have to make it work cap wise

Remember when the bruins didnt want Joe Thrornton or Tyler Seguin or Dougie Hamilton on their team.

The AVS didnt want ROR on their team.

Not all players who "Are not wanted" are because they are not good.

- ImThatGuy

Ya,
I also remember NYi trading Luongo, Chara, & signing DiPietro & Yashin to huge, horrible deals...
There's dumb GMs out there

Do Shanny & Babcock strike u as guys that don't know what they're doing?

Shanny has never been a GM in his life and Babcock builds around centers

Sabres have those in place and they need a top line RWer

Again the Leafs are about 5 years out from being anything but the Leafs of last season. The Sabres are a year away from the playoffs if not sooner.

You're assuming that
Maybe it's that thy aren't willing to give up anything good to take on a punk like him & the Leafs are hoping someone will make a better offer

LA has big Cap issues & they took on Lucic when he was available...
Now they'll figure out the Cap
If there's a deal to be made for a guy u REALLY like, u don't wait around
U get him & take the rest of the summer to figure out the Cap

Just like you are assuming everything else you have said

Also Boston is paying half of Lucic's salary

I was thinking about the Shanny point last night. Everyone just assumes that this is all going to work out for them. Why? The list of athletes that became successful organizational leaders is short and the ones that were terrible is long. Looks at Boston's GM. Also, if the rumors are true about LaFontaine not wanting to tank he would be on the list as well.
