Hopefully that is not how other teams value those guys.

Harrington was terrible when he was up, chutney was ahead of him by the end. Odds are only 1 of the 3 will be a decent nhl player.

I think if GMJR can add Oshie and Frolik in the next few days, the Pens forward core would go from a weakness to a strength. Both guys aren't stellar offensively, but don't have to be. What makes them both compelling is their 2 way play. The Pens top 6 would be extremely tough to play against in both ends of the rink.

a few guys we havent talked much about....

first is Mike Hoffman. some good insight from Travis Yost on that podcast. I did not realize he fell out of favor a bit in Ottawa last season (put on the 4th line in playoffs). I like his speed and obviously he scored a lot of goals last year at age 25. I think he'd be an excellent pickup...a guy with great wheels who can score ~20 goals...exactly what we want on a third or 4th line with an ability to move up to top 6

second is Grabner. Similar to Hoffman in that he is a speedy, relatively young, buy low candidate. I think he is purely a bottom 6er, but he is also very good on the PK

third is Mike Green. I think he is a little better than people give him credit for. His advanced metrics are still solid and hes a RH shot and great PP QB. He may be out of our price range but between Franson, Sekera, and Green....we have some options in the $5-6M range.

thoughts on if you like these guys as targets and what it might take to get them?

- YouMeAndDupuis9

Hoffman was injured in the playoffs I believe. No chance the Pens get him without giving up a lot.

I like Grabner a lot and he shouldn't be too expensive in assets to acquire. However, I don't think Snow would trade him within the division unless grossly overpaying for him.

Green is better than many give him credit for. But he is 30, injury prone, and will probably be as expensive in term as Franson so I see no reason to target him.

Cole re-signed fo 3 years at $2.1M. A little pricier than anticipated but can't complain.

Cole for 3 years at 2.1 a year... higher than I think we all first thought, but then when that article saying he was due for 2 to 3.5 came out... guess I can't complain.

That's excellent. They gave him more to lock him up longer term. This will save money in the long run.

A little pricier? The reports were saying 2-2.5 per. Love that we got him locked up for three seasons. Our cap situation is starting to take shape such is a great thing when considering deals and FA signings

If he can solidify himself as a good #4 or #5, that contract is a great value. Just think, Robert Bortuzzo is making 2.9M....

Edit: I meant to say Derek Englland

Can't find Bortuzzo's deal anywhere...

But Cole has potential to be a #3 defenseman on many teams. Not here because we got Pouliot and Maatta, but I'll be quite upset if hes can't become our #4 after how much he stepped up last year.

Bear... and that was still in my mind, a misprint/miscommunication on his contract deal when that occurred. I refuse to believe they didn't mean 2.9 million over three years, not per year.

I was assuming he'd get about $1.75M for 2 years. Not a big deal at all. The extra year makes it worth it. Nice deal.

Hahaha I was about to say. It would have blown my mind of Bortuzzo got another ridiculous contract. There must be something in the water in the Pens locker room if Orpik, Niskanen, Engalland, AND Bortuzo had all gotten awful contracts.

That's what the Pens are planning on. It's smart by Rutherford and exactly what I wanted. It's a risk but it is a smart one to take if they believe in him. BTW, I think you are talking about Engelland.

Nice value on Cole. I have high hopes for him this season. 8-10 goals and around 30 points playing most of the season rotating in the 4-5 spot. I figure if he gets around 18:30 per game those numbers could be on the upper end.

I concur. The three year term is clutch. Lots of hefty contracts will be cleared and the cap situation for the tail end of the Crosby-Malkin Era should be clear by the time he's up for extension. Very good deal indeed, boys.

I know we've had our fair share of Blues fans in here saying that Cole is just ehh, but it seems like he fits into the Pens system a lot better.

Part of why Chorney was ahead is because he could play RD. That and he could be called up on emergency and reportedly nobody else could. So I wouldn't say Chorney is necessarily ahead, we were just much deeper on LD.

That's how I feel. Wasn't sure if they were going to go for lower cap hit or longer-term.
