Wow... that was kinda easy.

My bad, thinking I was remembering the "under 35" part as 30 mil... Still, 6 years, thats asking for trouble.

Just showing what was thrown out there at the draft time... regardless, I don't think anyone believes Martin will take anything less than 3 years, more than likely 4 at the least.

The fans would hate this, even if Martin did sign short term, because the team would again have very little money invested in the forward group and almost all of it in the blue line. Granted, if healthy, Pens would have a stacked blue line. But since they have been eliminated 3 years in a row due to lack of scoring, I know this would be an unpopular decision.

You may be right. Again, I'm just looking at the idea of injuries. We all know how their injuries bit them harder than almost anything else. They can build up that forward depth this year with Frolik/Parenteau/Plotnovik\Tikhonov. That's assuming there isn't a roster shifting trade I guess.

To me Martin isn't a guarantee and long term doesn't work. Franson does though and that gives us a solid Top 4 with several options for that final pairing.

Ah... so, get an extra 1st just to sell it off for a prospect that already looks promising to a team that has a few.

Stop using logic! Penguins aren't allowed to do sensible moves!!!

- Guile

I mean use that 1st to trade for someone older and who will be a free agent 3 months after

Could be very true. I just find the Penguins being the ones to consider a 6 year contract at market value for him...even if front loaded to be a little ridiculous. I love Martin too. Just don't think that term makes sense for us.

Franson makes the most sense out of UFA dmen by far. Pens are not in good shape when it comes to the number of RH dmen they have. Maatta, Pouliot, Dumoulin, and Harrington all prefer to play the left side as LH dmen. Franson would help offset that.

Martin only makes sense if he is signing a 3 year contract at most. And I doubt he is doing that. Most likely, he'll want longer and if that is the case, I'd prefer the Pens let him walk.

Lets go with Martin only wants 3 years, and then hes sensible, he wants to retire, enjoy his family and money (gotta be some players who think like that in the NHL).

What are we offering him for 3 years? 5 a year, 5.5, or down near 4 a year?

I can't imagine him accepting less than $5m/yr. Due to the shorter term of the contract, he'd probably want something on the higher end of his range per year. So probably like $6m. I'd consider that for two years. I think three would be a stretch. I believe it is all but certain Martin will get a good number of long term options like Orpik had and doubt the Pens can keep him without offering the same.

Martin will be looking for term on his new deal because this is the last year he can sign one without it being guarateed to count agaist the teams cap due to the under 35 rule.

Yes to PA
No to Richards
Yes to Frolik
Sign Plot
Sign Tik
Sign a 3C to play 4C interim (say Mattias)
Be sellers at the TDL with Kuni and Sutter. Replace them with Kap and Sund.

Very pleased GMJR didn't sell the farm for Kessel, Sharp, Oshie.... Toronto WANTS to move Kessel, CHI HAS to move Sharp, STL HAS/WANTS to shake up their lineup. Only common theme in all these rumors is the Pens are interested. CHI and STL are now in a precarious spot. They run the risk of offer sheets coming in now (Saad, Tarasenko) and are still in cap hell. Price should come down.

Of course I like the idea of signing Frolik, but I think trading for a boneafide scorer is more urgent and I'm not sure we can do both with cap restrictions. Naturally, signing Frolik would be awesome. He could really blossom next Sid or Geno or a futer third line with him and Sundqvist would rock moving forward in the future. However, if he's gonna get five mil then we can't really trade for a scorer so if he doesn't pan out as a mainstay in our top 6 we're kinda f-ed.

The reports linked were that he likes Pittsburgh & would consider a reduced contract to stay. Tojo I think linked a TIOPS link that showed 6 years last 2 being 1.5m per.

I think if they can keep them all for the next couple of years & also grab Chorney for depth. As Harrington moves in 1 of Maatta or DP can be traded for a fortune. By then we should have the forward prospects playing & drafting D again. The return for the D trade will help restock & give a player or 2 hopefully. Just think, a working functioning system developing players.

Tanger, Maatta
DP, Dumo/Cole
Dumo/Cole, Lovejob
Chorney
Harrington

Anyone read the trib article with the scouts breaking down our roster? Said Dumo is a bottom pairing guy and Harrington may not have the foot speed for the NHL. These are 2 scouts from different organizations evaluating our roster. However they said they were big fans of Sutter's.

I actually was so mad I commented haha. It's a joke. I read it last night, called him out on the scouts and he edited the article to say "western scouts" and my comment was deleted lol
Trib is such a joke. they literally praise Scuds while saying Harrington is too slow.

The scouts he talked to said Dumo wasn't "hard" enough... You need a vet to clean up pouliot's messes... Sutter is good...

I would still sign him, yes. Martin isn't a guarantee and even if he is it's just stopgap/depth. I would prefer to run with just youth but we have to be careful with that because of the very likely scenario of injuries.

Franson will probably get a 4-5 year deal. Martin is more than likely looking 1-2. I'd have Dumoulin and Harrington at the ready if Martin isn't brought back. Lovejoy is still there for now. Buyout Scuderi or trade him if you can.

Maatta-Letang
Cole-Franson
Pouliot-Martin

Dumoulin-Lovejoy
Harrington

Buyout Scuderi

Stop it with the defense. Play the young guys all regular season. They help with the cap and by the time the deadline gets here then you can add a veteran. Martin is old and any contract he gets will be with a term his new team will regret.

We absolutely cannot afford to put ourselves in a situation where we have to go out and make a deadline trade and lose even more assets. That's why I'm strongly pro signing either Martin or Fransen. All the kids still get their spots, but they're in reduced roles making our defense over all stronger, plus it makes them a tad more expendable if there's a trade out there that we really like.

a few guys we havent talked much about....

first is Mike Hoffman. some good insight from Travis Yost on that podcast. I did not realize he fell out of favor a bit in Ottawa last season (put on the 4th line in playoffs). I like his speed and obviously he scored a lot of goals last year at age 25. I think he'd be an excellent pickup...a guy with great wheels who can score ~20 goals...exactly what we want on a third or 4th line with an ability to move up to top 6

second is Grabner. Similar to Hoffman in that he is a speedy, relatively young, buy low candidate. I think he is purely a bottom 6er, but he is also very good on the PK

third is Mike Green. I think he is a little better than people give him credit for. His advanced metrics are still solid and hes a RH shot and great PP QB. He may be out of our price range but between Franson, Sekera, and Green....we have some options in the $5-6M range.

thoughts on if you like these guys as targets and what it might take to get them?

Lovejoy is in the top 6 no matter what. This happens every year though. These guys need to play and we bring in Scuderi, Lovejoy, Erhoff, etc... They don't pan out and we wasted a mostly meaningless regular season watching veterans instead of preparing these young guys for the playoffs.

Buyouts can't occur till the 1st... Technically, its still the smart move to not give any clue they are doing it until its time.
