Yea on the flip side if Lehner is a disaster then the term becomes a burden and not a positive.

There were a lot of goalies available this year. I know he has a ton of faith in Lehner but I saw red flags when Ottawa resigned Hammond and went after O'Connor. Most of us said we would take the chance on Lehner for a 3rd rounder.

Totally agree. If Lehner doesn't become a #1 goalie then the trade was terrible. We just won't know that for a year or two.

Not necessarily. Johnson is only under contract for this year, so if Lehner does become a disaster, you bring someone else in during the offseason and push Lehner to the backup role.

Me either. It's a mistake. Irbe was the common factor last season with all the overachieving goaltenders.

It's not known if Irbe didn't want to stay or if Bylsma didn't want to hire him. I can tell you Irbe is very loyal to Ted Nolan and wasn't looking for a job. He only came to the Sabres as their goaltending coach because Nolan wanted him to.

To be honest, none of this surprises me. Once Nolan was let go I figured Irbe would be out too. The fact that he's been around this long after the fact was more shocking to me than the fact that it's coming out that he's not going to be here.

I would guess that he had a talk with Bylsma, said he'd prefer to go back over to Latvia and Bylsma is respecting that.

Remember how long it took Nolan to get him to even agree to it last year? Irbe was pretty comfortable with just staying in Latvia but I think Nolan was persistent enough to convince him to come anyway.

I don't think so. He can't be any more upset about working with Lehner than he would have been when he had Neuvirth and Enroth taken from him and given Lindback and Johnson.

For the record - I think the chance that Lehner turns into a #1 is worth more than the 21st pick in this years draft to this Franchise.

But if Irbe was only here hanging by a thread, and then got told that he would have an assignment that he didn't particularly like, maybe he would go back home.
