I wouldn't mind giving him a low salary, one year chance to revive his career in Philly.

Grossmann was a far bigger cap hit if bought out-rather than a 1/3rd cap hit for Gagner, being under 26 and shared by Tampa Bay-and was also Arizona's primary target.

The deal sees the Flyers lose $7.91mm in cap obligations to Grossmann and Pronger, get a guy in Gagner that is a very cheap buy out-which adds even more to the potential cap space gained-or add a guy that can be a middle 6 forward option.

For the Coyotes, they get $7.91mm closer to the salary floor and only have to spend about $4mm over two years to do it. They also get the bonus of not having to spend more cash on the Gagner buy out, which they had fully planned to do this week.

The deal didn't work for Umberger or Lecavalier, because they are both owed too much money. Umberger's salary matches his cap hit, so Arizona would have to pay $4.5mm a year to him. Lecavalier is owed $10.5mm more over three years. Pronger is only owed $575K in actual dollars in each of the next two years, so it's an easy way for Arizona to be in compliance with the salary floor.

Grossmann's buy out would be $1.166mm in each of the next two years. Gagner's buyout will cost the Flyers about $ 600K less.

I'm in favor of keeping Sam Gagner. I don't love him or anything but I had interest in Nazim Kadri is available but I feel Gagner can serve the same role. If I remember right, once upon a time, Sam Gagner was a really good shootout specialist.

I'm completely neutral on Gagner, but if I was forced to make a choice, probably would keep him, because it's a low risk roll of the dice. He's on a one year deal, that's not too much cash and if he doesn't fit, they still might be able to dump him for a pick at the TDL

Unless he magically becomes a gym rat and starts taking his fitness and career seriously, I don't think any team offers him anything more than a tryout.

Ekblad and Hedman didn't go back either.

Provorov might be one, too, but I'm not counting on it. I think he'll be a full time NHLer in 16-17 though.

But where would you play him, where he is demonstrably better than someone the Flyers already have?

The corpse of R.J. Umberger was as productive as Richards last season, and not because of a fluke. He just can't skate at the pace of even a fringe player anymore.

I am sad he is done, but not surprised -- he could barely keep up with the play two years ago, got worse a year ago, and they just couldn't hide him this year at all.

It's brutal, and he might get a tryout because he is 30, but he was done last year and Lombardi is now publicly kicking himself for not doing what everyone knew he should have done, which is use the compliance buyout

Already have an second and 6th rounder next season and a conditional 4th. Love Hexy's approach.

FA is so weak, unless you have something cooking with Michael Frolik, to me, you might as well see if Gagner can be a set-up man for Simmonds as ES

I am no capologist, but one year of Sam Gagner on the books can't be something that prevents them from doing something else they might want to do

Flyers have never had cap problems
- PhillySportsGuy

Exactly, It's all conjecture and hyperbole.

Even when hextall has been quoted there's more cap issues to clean up than this....clearly that is not the case
