And what if Semin does what Semin has been known to do and the reason why the Caps didn't want a 40g scorer with a ton of talent?

You're stuck with a guy for 2 more years and you wasted assets and right back where you started.

- sammy87

Then we don't lose anything as we had to pay Sutter anyway, and now we have also a 2nd round pick...

Again, what Semin has been known to do is score 25 goals and 55-60 points on a bad year prior to last one.

I dont think they will take 1 yr of Sutter for 50% of Semin....makes no sense for CAR.

'other' is favourite 2/1 - has come in overnight.
I'll throw Semin in there with the Canes connection at 6/1 - gone out
Rychel 7/1 - leaving
Skinner 7/1 - getting some interest
All others over 15/1 - there is a dark horse in that lot that no one has mentioned but betting may be separated into a single name (e5) if JR continues to remain silent (doesn't mix with water & is slippery ).

- Aussiepenguin

So basically we're getting someone like Loui Eriksson whom we've completely ignored.

Yes it does, they save $3.5mil of Semin, and use that for a 3C who could potentially fill in at 2C...who they can sign to an extension as well..if Sutter doesn't stick around past this year then they have cap room that would have been stuck with Semin.

He hasn't scored 25 goals since he was with the Caps in 2011, his last 3 years in the playoffs he was not good either and that was 10', 11', and 12'. His 25goal years are behind him and he's a defensive liability on the ice, pair that with Malkin's defensive prowess spells disaster.

And if Sutter has no plans of being part of a major rebuild and walks.......?

I'd send them Scuderi and only ask for 1.5M retained per year, even Kunitz if need be, though I want to get a pick for him. 6.7M for Scuds I think is better than 6M dead space and is off their ledger in 2 years.

Then as I said, CAR has 3.5mil extra cap space per year to go after FAs in the next 2 years.

They flip him at the deadline for picks.

Might take more, but it won't cost a major asset.

He plays with Ward and Backstrom. You always read Geno wants a Russian to play with. Seems childish.
- sammy87

You also read he wants to be traded so don't believe everything you read.

They can do that as well, maybe even get a 1st or at least recoup their 2nd rounder...

But not a proven top 6 guy. You're looking at somebody who is likely just a bit better than Perron...again, I'd take my chances with keeping the 1st, adding a second and seeing what Semin can do.
- mventres

You don't add a second with Sutter to get Semin. That isn't smart.

You're looking at totals, not goal pace. Anything at .30 gpg 24.6 goals

if Eriksson had 2 years left on his deal instead of 1 I'd be all for him. But his next contract will most likely take him into his mid 30s. Good 2 way forward who plays a smart game

That would be an interesting target as well. I'd prefer him to Semin...assuming BOS would take salary on...

Who is the target player?? If he's older than 27 or 28 I don't think it's worth it for PIT...

I'd rather keep the 1st, pick up a second and roll the dice on Semin.

- mventres

If giving up major assets, Oshie would be the best rumored player. I still don't think he is that much better than Frolik. I would view the Pens cap situation better than their prospect situation. If the Pens overpay for Frolik it's not going to cripple the team. If they overpay in a trade, they are crippled in the future.

LOL not close. STL would want more than that for Oshie...plus they have enough C and would have no interest in Sutter.

A $7m player at half price for 3 years + a 2nd round pick gets you more than an overpaid 3rd line center.
- nurk

You keep referring to Sutter as overpaid. He is not. If you want a definition of overpaid go to th Flyers thread and discuss Vinny Lecvalier.

That's a good point. Better to overpay Frolik by 1M then give up a top prospect.

I would bet Oshie will cost more than Sharp and less valuable than Kessel.

Those prospects will save a lot more in the long run than the excess Frolik is paid.
