I think Pommer got us Zadorov.
- mhp

I wish we never had to trade Pommer.

of that whole entire core and group.... Pommer is the one that still hurts the most. THe only reason that he even got leveled out is because they put the C on him whether it was just to raise the trade value or not.

If we could of had Pommer and kane here right now instead of Kane and Moulson..

Being an old (frank) I have a great fondness for the the drafting in the 70's.

What was the best decade for drafting?

70's- Perreault, Martin, Ramsay, Hajt, Schoenfeld, Gare, Derek Smith, Sauve, Edwards, Seiling, Playfair, McKegney, Mike Ramsey, Ruff.

80's- Virta, Housley, Cyr, Andreychuk, Barrasso, Creighton, Tucker, Puppa, Ruuttu, Krupp, Sheppard, Calle Johnasson, Hogue, Turgeon, Mogilny, Ray, Plante.

90's- Brad May, Smehlik, Dawe, Holzinger, Barnaby, Khmylev, Primeau, Curtis Brown, McKee, Biron, Rasmussen, Sarich, Tallinder, Afinogenov, Campbell, Miller.

2000's- Gaustad, Roy, Pominville, Paille, Vanek, MacArthur, Stafford, Enroth, Weber, Myers, Ennis, Foligno.

2010-2014- Pysyk, Grigorenko, Girgensons, Risto, Zads, Reinhart.

For me it's close between the 70's and 80's but gotta go with what Punch did in the 70's to build this expansion team.

What say you?

That is some great research. Good work there. Depressing but good.

I had no idea that Armia fell off when he got to WPG's AHL squad. All i knew is that Stafford and Myers were killing it for WPG.

Armia had 8 pts in 21 games but I looked at St. John's team around Armia... Peter Budaj is the only name on that entire roster that I even recognize. While in Rochester he had some pretty damn good colleagues to help him out.

I was on business trips in Pennsylvania and Arkansas last week.... I am not nearly as constant on here as I once was.

Back in the great days of Miller being an elite goaltender in this league.

Still early to make a claim on those guys though. People seemed pretty hopeful of the guys we drafted rounds 2-7 before Pegula.

For all the blame Benning gets for the early 2000's, Devine has been the head amateur scout for 8 years now and you rarely hear any criticism of him.

Edit: was for 8 years under darcy

- Sabresfan-365

And I'm sure that the video thing had some to do with his struggles as well. I'm not sure when they went to that system specifically. But look at what Devine has managed to do since Pegula took over. We also don't know much about who made those early round picks before either. Was it Benning/Devine or Darcy? We know who seems to be responsible for them now, due to the Blue and Gold series they put out each year that covers the draft, but there's no evidence of who it was prior to that.

We could try to trade Weber for Patrick Kane too but I just don't see that happening.

Goalies' value is at an all time low. If any goalie is getting traded it would be Howard IMO.

All of these guys are talking about lack/markstrom or Talbot... Howard I think should be a high target too.

In general goalies never seem to garner a whole lot via trade. There always seems to be quite a few of them available for whatever reason which causes their value to be fairly low.

GMTM said this weekend that it appears he will need to trade for a starting goalie in Buffalo and both Rochester.

I don't see why Chad Johnson couldn't be the one down in Rochester and then we sign Lindback to back up or tandem with a guy like Lack, Markstrom, Howard, Niemi.

In LU of prison term he should have to serve community service where he coaches a misfit youth hockey team, steal the best player in the league away from his former coach who somehow hadn't aged is 30 years.

Early yes but I'd say they have increased their value since being drafted. Usually for years it was the other way around

they hit UFA in 12 months

they are no better IMO then signing Niemi, Ramo, Duby, all 3 UFA's and cost no assets

give up a second for lack or talbot, or offer 2 seconds for bishop, jones, gibosn, etc

I am more inclined to go the other option
