Agreed. Try signing Frolik(big, RW, good 2nd line while Poirier shapes up), and not give up assets for a similar and older player. Give Frolik 4.25/yr for 3-4 yrs. trade the 15, a 2nd and Hiller to move to #9. Sign Bartkowski and Schlemko. Maybe try improving D during the season. This assumes we can re-sign Ramo.
Edit: this scenario would look good to get Werenski. Add a sweetner if SJ want it. - FLflames34
That's crazy money and Term for Frolik. When you start paying Gudreau, Money and later on Bennett what they deserve, you'll hate that deal. The smart cap teams are gonna live and die by ELC's and not over paying for replaceable veterans. |

Guarantee you that most teams would prefer/value Hudler as a winger and Backes as a center. - Nucker101
Nucker, ya bastid, stop having so much fun in here and come back to where you belong with the rest of us miserable, jaded, bitter, cynical - oh and of course vestigial-tailed - neanderthal Canuck board denizens!! We're extremely worried you are embracing the dark side (personally I think it's a mid-life Kesler crisis ) and once that happens then soon you'll find yourself watching cricket, contact bocci, playing nude-twister (without a codpiece) and generally aspiring to be another slightly less narcissistic version of Vantel (who says hi by the way lol) but without the Filipina hotties |

Well, it's pretty much a market inflation match on Jones. They can afford it next year, he would be a better fit on the 2nd line than Jones, and is a better player. If they can carry Jones contract now, they could carry Frolik for the following two years. Hell, just make it a 2 yr deal at that money. Also, yes it is an overpayment but cheaper than unloading assets for older players. Just a shot in the dark, I am not going to be sad if it doesnt happen. |

I think that's the way to go. Shorter term deals. Nothing worse that getting stuck with a depreciating asset that could otherwise be easily replaced. |

Outside of Whipper who's just jealous, I believe I'm well accepted here and the Flames are my team now and forever. |

I've come to the realization that Hiller has the trade value of a Corona. So I think Ramo is probably gone. Anyone ok with Ortio getting 30 starts next year? Seems dangerous. |

I expect to be blackout drunk in February when Foles lifts the VL and Bradford is getting a bionic leg.
The problem is all my jerseys are traded. Time for an Alonso this year? - FLflames34
Chip's lost his (frank)ing mind, thank God he's a good coach but as a GM he's like a kid playing Madden.
Mathis gone too |

Ortio should be brought along slowly, he should get 25-30 starts max next year, splitting with one of the vets. |

The only move I am remotely ok with is Alonso, who is coming off a shredded knee so who knows. Shady seems like a prima donna.
As much as I miss Foles, Maclin is the biggest loss. That and 2/5 of the Oline, Cole, no safety still ect.
Bradford will be on his back the entire season.
B Dawk should unretire! |

Gillies probably needs at least 2 yrs until he is truly ready. I can't see the loss and sit strategy working near as well for Hartley if it is Hiller-Ortio. Seems to be a poor way to develop a goalie who are notoriously slower to get ready for the NHL.
Maybe LeBron can play net? |

I agree completely. I actually like bradford, I would have been okay with it if the trade was Bradford+ for Foles...but instead it's the other way around
Maclin was a tough loss, didn't like the Agholor pick with Perriman still on the board. Ugh. |

As I have said all offseason either 12-4 or 4-12. Too many changes to even guess at any smaller range. Let's hope Bradford can stay with a clean jersey, he is deadly accurate if protected. |

Bennett plays the same style of game as Lucic without the size. Can you imagine the two on the 2nd line behind Hud/Gaud/Mony line? I would love to see us go after Luche. 1 year test drive. If we faulted, trade him at the TDL & get some of the assets back. Tspoon/Granlund & a 3rd would be a smoking deal for us
I would also be down with carrying Savards cap hit for two years. Tspoon & our #45 for Savard & their 1st. - Kevin R
Dude, why are you so quick to trade the best of our very few D prospects that look like they have NHL capabilities. If we trade Wotherspoon, I sure hope it's as part of a package that brings back a D with a higher ceiling. Something like a Hamilton. |

ya pretty much that.
after spoon, and maybe morrisey (who could be ready since he played college so is older). it drops off, none of them ready to play...or maybe even ever play more then a 5-7 spot. Stoner maybe the closest.
D and a solid RW are big gaps. And I think we have a better chance at a surprise in RW then with D looking at our prospects. So we shouldn't trade D unless an upgrade.

I agree with the idea that Wotherspoon is the best D prospect, but you make it out like he will be a top pairing defender. He will maybe be a 4th defenseman, but more realistically a 5/6.
So if they were to move him (and I'm not saying that I want them to) while it would make that area of the prospect pool thinner, they aren't giving up the franchise. So while it may not greatly dent that area (which I agree is already depleted), doing so could vastly improve another. Then they can look at other options to improve there. In this draft I can think of 3 or 4 guys that will probably be available at 15 that I would already slot ahead of Wotherspoon. And there have already been new signings that may be better suited to step in.
Despite me saying that, I also want to see him prove me wrong. |

I think that's absolutely fine. As much fun as this past season was, I sincerely doubt that the Flames will repeat the same magic. I expect that the underlying possession numbers will improve and the team will actually play better in general, but points totals (both individual and for the team) will decrease. It will look like the team has regressed, but it will actually have improved. The only regression will be to the mean. As long as BT and BB keep looking at the long term, though, the team is in good hands.
So yeah, get Ortio some solid experience in the NHL, but expect some inconsistency and expect the team overall to play better but with worse results.
Re: Beleskey – I see everyone's point, but looking at his numbers I also see a relatively young guy who has improved every year. $4mil is too much, for sure, though I agree he might actually get that from someone. $2.5 to maybe 3 would be acceptable on a 2-3 year deal. Now that I've written it out, though, it doesn't seem likely he or his agent would go for that. |
