Yeah, I just checked his sh% and totally edited my post. But his scoring chance numbers have always been solid.

Hes fine, but around the 2.5-3m range as a 3rd line depth guy you move up to Top 6 when injuries happen. Once you pay him 4m, him as a Top 6 regular...woof

Yeah, that's most likely the case. But GM's are desperate, they're not dumb but they do stupid things when their job is one the line.

I wonder bc the cap isnt as high as teams first assumed if guys are going to be coming down wtih their demands.

Seems like a really bad year to be a UFA

Maybe, but there are also a some teams who are close to or below to the cap floor so either they'll be raising the prices or they'll be taking salary from the contending teams to give those teams a chance at signing someone.

I don't think there's ever been a bad year to be a good UFA recently. Especially for defensemen.

IMHO I'd prefer to see the Flames save $5-6M in cap space for a defenseman. Although 5M+ for a free agent Dman like Franson is an overpayment (as are all FAs) - he's a legit top 4, right handed Dman, which is exactly what the Flames need.
If more size upfront is what we need, we have guys coming through the system like Shore, Wolfe & Smith that could slot into the bottom 2 lines next year.
Unless its a low-ball offer for a guy like Backes, I woudn't want to give up a high end prospect or high pick for a guy who's role we could fill internally now or in a couple years.

Franson isn't good defensively though, to me it's silly to pay 5M+ long-term for a d-man who needs to be protected from the other team's best forwards. Michalek or Beauchemin would be much more cost effective signings. I would even sign as guy like Ehrhoff instead if the term was short.

Franson is more of a #5 d-man who's a PP specialist.

Good point re: Franson, we have enough offensive Dman on the roster already. What I'm getting at is that money should be spent on defense rather than injury prone PF past his prime.

I just had a mustard and baloney sandwich . Almost as under rated as Keith Yandle.

I see Backes as a similar player to Gio. I think he would provide this team with the same sprite and leadership that Gio brings to the game. I could be wrong but from what i understand they're looking for some scoring touch and have some cap issues. I see a trade involving Hudler and Backes as the starting point. This would gain them the scoring touch but there would need to be more to solve there cap issue.

In some ways....but Gio is just an extremely productive player on top of all that.

A lot of people are questioning if Backes is even captain material. Plus he's had multiple concussions and is on the wrong side of 30. I would only trade for him if the price was reasonable and i suspect it won't be.

Hudler for Backes I could get on board with though, but the Blues would want more.

What would be a legit offer/return for Malkin?

Bennett +?

- stowerkraut

Probably, but that doesn't make sense for the flames as nice as the immediate return would be. I really wanna see Bennett have a long career in Calgary, I think he's the kind of player who wins a team championships.

I may be biased because he plays in the same division, but leadership and backes go together like diet and fat deadmarsh. As evidence, their playoff performances the past several seasons.
