And what teams would have the ability to offer sheet a player to the point the Sabres wouldn't match?

Cap Space is tight almost everywhere. I wouldn't worry about it.

Also nobody went after Edmonton with offer sheets. Nobody went after Philly with offer sheets after they went after Kesler.

IMO you are worrying for the sake of it.

And how did we all feel about the Vanek situation when the oilers did that to us...? Loved it right? So glad when we matched at 7 million cap hit and it was such a bargain.

Those offer sheets go both ways though... We do them and they hit us back with Eichel, Risto, Sam, etc... contracts come up.

We have a few that could get them this year. Gring....Varone...etc

The Sabres franchise had to match to save face after what happened with Drury and Briere. Eichel, Reinhart, and Risto will have more of a factor into what the Sabres become than Thomas Vanek.

Matching was the right thing to do at that time just because of the Briere/Drury fiasco. If one or both of those players re-signed in Buffalo I am not sure you see a Vanek match.

I know... Look at the last bunch of Offer Sheets that went out. Did any of them work out for the team that offered them?

Oilers and Penner (they got him, but how did it work out?)
Oilers and Vanek
Philadelphia and Weber
Calgary and RORORORORORO (they got lucky on that one since they were alowed to take it back)

Who am I missing? That's the only ones I remember off the top of my head.

Kesler -Philly offered they didn't get him

It's not the norm but its something that should be looked at.

I believe the Sharks got Niemi via offer sheet.

EDIT: I was wrong. It was Hjalmarsson that they offer sheeted. They got Niemi because the Hawks couldn't afford to match Hjalmarsson's offer and what Niemi was awarded in Arbitration.

True... Just not a fan I guess. What goes around comes around is the way I look at it.
That other team will eventually have the cap space to (frank) you over.

The only offer sheet since the lockout that hasn't been matched is the Penner one.

But it hasn't happened. Even to teams that have offered players and were matched. The risk behind it really is if that player doesn't live up to the hype (and the draft pick ends up being 1st overall)

To think other teams will purposely come after you just because you did offer sheet someone is a bit foolish. Those teams if they had the cap space would only go after you if you had good players and weren't managing your cap right.

I am not saying it should be done all the time, but with given how strapped to the cap teams are and the quality and quantity of good players out there you could be looking at a perfect storm here.

Sure it can. So could not buying out Hodgson, or buying out Hodgson and he turns his game around. It could happen everywhere. It's a risk, just like every other trade that happens. That shouldn't stop you from trying to build the best team anyway possible.

Imagine the likes of Tarasenko playing RW with Kane and Eichel.

Sure St. Louis will most likely match but its just a what if.

The only risk there is if he gets hurt.

Cap wise you can fit the core in just fine ie Risto, Reinhart, Kane, Eichel plus whomever you offersheet.

An offer sheet is simply nothing more than a trade offer - one that is in favor of the team losing the player. Would anyone not go back and take those 4 firsts for Vanek? The system is set up to benefit the team who could potentially lose the player. There is nothing wrong with going this route, particularly in an era where quality free agents are getting thinner and thinner.

On top of that, especially after what fans have been through with these two lockouts, teams that continuously push the envelope should be prepared to have these situations arise.

I get that... I think of offer sheets as last resort options. FA, trade, kidnapping, Offer sheet.

I'm having difficulty hearing anything properly this morning. I was apparently way too close to the speakers at Taste of Country last night.

You should come to Nashville for CMA Fest or whatever it's called now. It's this week and weekend. Same time as Bonaroo for some reason.

I so want to get to Nashville at some point. It's on my bucket list, that's for sure. There were 6 acts last night and I swear, the music got louder for each act. Dierks Bentley was the headliner. Show didn't end til 12, which if I'm not mistaken is against the noise ordinance, so I'm pretty sure WYRK is gonna be paying some sort of fine to the city.

Over in the Nucks thread they have been trying to move Hamhuis and Bieksa to anybody that would take them. Like Schultzie said, it would mean someone like Z or Pysyk/McCabe would be in Roch. Murray wants to keep the team young so not sure where they would fit. We have the vets (Gorges, Bogo) to fill those needs. Besides, Bieksa @ $4.6M for 1 more year at 33 yo and Hamhuis @ $4.5M on 1 more year at 32 is pricey. They can spend money other ways.

His ex guitar player lives across from my ex wife. Great guy, great musician.
They split ways when Dierks went back to the old school country or whatever he does now. They (Dierks and Rod) play hockey for some beer league in Nashville.

Dierks seems like a pretty cool guy himself. Still uses a guitar he's had for what he said is an eternity, and you can tell. It's definitely worn. Also drives a 1994 Chevy truck and has no want for a new one. He couldn't believe the crowd last night. Said it was actually a much better crowd than he'd played to in Nashville the previous night.

This is how close I was to the stage last night.

That reminds me, I think we should offer sheet McDavid when the time comes. It's only fair. They owe us.
