Leafs just bought 5.25m of 'opportunity cost' by trading away clarkson.

basically, retaining 1.5m on Phaneuf's salary in a deal, and signing a guy like ROR for 7m for 6y (instead of 6million for the same years) still is 2.75m less in caphit/opportunity cost than having Clarkson on your team.

ROR's contract would end when he's 31 and still has a few good not great years ahead of him.

Crosby's contract runs until he's 37 and his career will long be over (form a production standpoint).

And when Crosby signed his new deal, the salary cap was around 59-60 million.

The cap will be over 70 million next season. It's not the same circumstances at all.

Oh I agree - Phaneuf can possibly traded without retaining salary.

It's just in reference to the 'opportunity costs'.
It's why leafs can take on a contract like Mike Richards' for example as well in a deal which would get them a great return (bc of taking on Richards' contract)
