Few of those guys got paid before winning a cup. Few won after getting paid. I'd be willing to venture that most of them were making 2-3 mill when they won the cup.

Only those who were younger still on bridge contracts
Look at the going rate for guys like Bishop & Elliott
Look what Holtby is gonna get

I don't WANT to spend that much on a goalie
But to get a GOOD one, that the going rate now
Those scrubs we had last year aren't getting us anywhere but a top5 pick again

If we can get a Gibson, then move on to Ullmark, then move on to who we draft late 1st / 2nd, and just continue to do that on the cheap & keep winning then of course that's ideal...
But no team has been able to do that
Even when Chicago let Niemi go, they settled on paying Crawford
Detroit paid Howard
And so on & so on

So high we exposed him in the expansion draft

We also exposed Hasek in an expansion draft

Detriot paid Howard. How are they doing now. Chicago let Niemi go and got another cup then paid Crawford. After this season they are screwed.

You can't over pay for a goalie.

So who is this goalie that you'd acquire? Nobody disagrees that you want the "right" player. Seeing as few goalies are repeat winners it seems as though we are all speculating on the next guy. All the more reason not to wager too much on the bet. For all we know guys like Bernier, Talbot, Neuvirth could be good enough as it is all just speculation.
- Slump Buster

Allen, Vasilevskiy, Gibson (don't know if any will be available)
Haven't seen enough from jones yet, every LA goalie looks good
I do like Bernier a lot also actually

The guys we had last year have a big enough sample size that says they shouldn't even be STARTERS, let alone have the ability to actually take us anywhere in the playoffs

And that's the disconnect. Holtby isn't going to be twice as good when he doubles his salary. No need to get the guy after he gets paid. If we get a good one then we pay him. If I were TM I'd try to acquire high-ceiling guys like Markstrom, Neuvirth (he was a top goalie prospect before injuries setin), etc and let them battle it out for a year. We're in no hurry.

(shrug) how do you know that? Enroth finally got the chance to be a starter and played out of his skull. Neuvirth was a decent starter before injuries go to him. Lindback was a good prospect that just never quite put it together.

Detroit makes the playoffs EVERY year
They haven't win a Cup BC they haven't replaced Lidstrom
That has nothing to do with what they paid Howard

Chicago isn't screwed BC they paid Crawford
They lose guys every year just BC u can't pay everyone when your team is always stacked

Who's a team that's won multiple Cups WITHOUT paying their goalie?
Chicago did it ONCE, then decided they needed to pay to keep Crawford. Seeing as how they're one of the best teams every year, I'd say their judgement speaks volumes.
Only reason they let Niemi go was BC they did have Crawford.
They didn't go sign a scrub like want us to do

On the flip side all of them pretty much sucked after the left buffalo.

BBC the sample size of their failures is MUCH bigger than that of their success
I don't KNOW they won't be good enough,
But it's a more reasonable assumption given their history

When NO team signs any of them to be a starter this year I guess my point will be proven

But none of this is justification to pay the goalie (and some of it is justification to not pay the goalie). Once again, the list of "decent" goalies to win the cup is long. Crawford was a prospect before he won, as was Quick, Rask, Ward, etc. I am completely advocating going out and getting a prospect the same way they did. By your logic they should have gone out and gotten the "sure thing".

Those guys aren't gonna come cheap in a trade. If goalies are not worth paying why would teams dump their young cheaper goalies. They will dump bishop, Anderson, and quick to save salary then. Plus guys like jones Gibson and vasilevsky will want to get paid on their new team.

The teams that won with a cheap goalie (quick, Crawford, niemi) werent scrubs. They were actually good goalies on bridge deals. They all got paid. If we are going the cheap goalie route we need to find one that will be on a bridge deal in 3-4 years when we are ready for cup runs before they get paid then

Again, all of the guys that we talked about did not have a huge sample size when they won. The teams picked a young guy and went to battle. We'll do the same.

BC like in LA, all Bruins goalies look good
The isles thought thy needed an upgrade with him as their backup...
But you'd try him out as our starter?!

I just don't get why everyone thinks these average goalies will suddenly become good?

Yes, and it isn't uncommon for a start not to play well when he tries to transition to being a backup. This is why Lindy burned so many backups that were actually decent starters (Roloson).

I don't want to make the playoffs every year. I want to win.

I can't name a team that has won because they paid their goalie after they won since broduer

Chicago didn't sign Niemi because they didn't think he was worth the money. I live near and work with people who live I. Chicago they don't think Crawford is worth what they are paying him. In fact they think they have a better chance with darling in goal next season

Once again, after the top 4 the next grouping is large and almost completely indistinguishable from each other. By your logic I could go get Howard because he has won and makes a lot so he must be good.

I agree. Why I think we need a true talent evaluator to find us a starter

The guys I just said we should trade for are not "sure things"

And you're saying teams like the Hawks shouldn't have paid their "Crawfords" and should've just went with an Enroth?

Well, no offense, but I'm gonna side with the Hawks on that one
And every other NHL team agrees with me too

Yes, it's optimal to develop a young goalie that u draft
But when he has success,
U pay him
Unless u have another young goalie that can jump in for cheaper
But that doesn't happen often
