No - the City is losing money on the deal and they may have an out since the Coyotes hired the City Attorney that negotiated the contract. The Mayor was opposed to the deal when it was negotiated and he was in Council. |

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss this one.
Owners have an out clause to leave Glendale after the 2018 season if they've lost $50 million over five years. Let's just say they are well ahead of schedule on that one.
Glendale currently gives the Coyotes $15 million a year. Yeah, you read that correctly. And in a fabulous bit of accounting, that $15 million/year doesn't count when looking at whether or not the Coyotes are losing money.
So if I'm Glendale City Council, why would I continue to fork over $15 million a year, knowing that they are leaving in 3 seasons anyways? |

Because they signed a contract?
If the Coyotes move, it's in 3 years when the out-clause is executable. |

that seemed to be pretty well known at the time. kinda of stretch to go back and say it is a conflict now.
even if they did have a leg to stand on, i imagine this would take years to sort out in the courts. Coyotes aren't giving up their $15M/year sweetheart deal easily.
The mayor is simply pandering to his voter base. Nothing more. |

He probably means the actual cash $, which I'm not so sure Boston needs to shed for any reason. |

the contract is insured i believe, if so, Boston doesn't need to move it |

His (Savard) contract is insured so his money is guaranteed. And under the CBA, because he is forced to retire because of injury, the NHL (not the Bruins) will continue to pay into his pension plan and other benefits (CDN) for a period of 5 years from the Player’s Emergency Assistance Fund (Section 21.5, page 103 of the CBA).

I think there were time constraints for insuring the contract which weren't met. |

Good trade for the Leafs though.
Horton in traction is better than Clarkson playing. |

The Citylawyer was hired by the Coyotes after the deal was negotiated. Arizona law is clear that governments can void contracts if an employee who was substantively involved in negotiations is hired by the company he was negotiating with. I'm Not sure if there is a question of how involved he was but as City Attorney, I'd have to think pretty involved.
This may get drawn out and Courts are weird down there but it looks like the City might have a leg to stand on. |
