Me too. We could trade for a band-aid 2nd line center and then trade him at the deadline or play Girgensons at #1A and Eichel at #2B with Larsson, Grigorenko or Hodgson at the #3. We would look better than this past season, but not awesome by any means.

I would bring in any new centers...
Not unless we "steal" someone from a team in Cap trouble

With Reinhart in the AHL, my top3 centers in Buffalo would be Eichel, Girgensons & Grigorenko
I know many would say Larsson has passed Grigorenko, but I feel like Larsson fits better on the 4th line
And Larsson won't be a top3 center on this team anyways, so why out him there for a year only to bump him back down when Reinhart is brought up?
I also think Hodgson gets first crack at a top9 RW slot, but if he doesn't rebound from last year then we will prob see Larsson get a shot

I like Larsson as a winger. I actually think him on the wing with Girgensons as 3rd liners in the future would be a nice duo. I could also see Grigo do okay facing lesser talent playing a full season at #3 center.

Waste of a good player to put girgenson as a 3rd line center. Especially because our future top 2 line centers can play in all situations and command the majority of ice time.

Wild blogger is saying they need a #2 center in the off season. May be GMTM should send their GM a highlight reel of Hodgson/Vanek/Pommenville.
This could be YOU!!!!!

Not sure where they are cap wise and too lazy to look it up.....

They're right up against it
So unless they can shed some salary, the only real move they can make is to resign Dubnyk & get Grandlund signed
They only got 10mil to do that and then fill out their roster
They might actually be in a spot where they need to offer someone a decent pick or prospect to take Backstrom off their hands
There's a lot more teams in Cap trouble than we realize

Ya, I can agree with that
A Foligno-Girgensons-Larsson 3rd line could drive other teams scoring lines crazy

I think down the road Girgensons at 3, Rinehart at 2 and Eichel at 1 would be a pretty impressive lineup of centers. you could even call Rinehart and Girgensons 2A and 2B or whatever depending on the matchup, or who is playing better that night.
Either way, im not complaining!

As always good article Mike. I agree with trading Cody Hodgson, he's a defensive liability and not in the future top six of this team. Also, his style of play does not suit bottom six consideration either. Therefore, you either trade him or buy him out. If you're able to get anything for him in a trade that would be a small victory.

As for Mikhail Grigornenko, I disagree with trading him. Similar to Hodgson, his style of play only fits within the top six forwards. I understand the argument to trade him since the team no longer has room for him as a top 1-2 center since those spots will/should belong to Eichel and Reinhart. At the same time, he just turned 21, has been handled horribly by the previous regime, and did just produce 36 pts in 43 games with Rochester last year. Plus he is 6'3 and 220 pounds with the skill level to play in the top six.

With that in mind why trade low on him now? The return will be no where near the 12th overall pick we used on him. Why not give him a chance on the wing next year? The reality is the Sabres will not be making the playoffs next year, so give him a two year prove it contract and see what he can do. With some stability, and playing with more talent he could finally live up to expectations. I would rather see him fail here the next two years than get a 2nd rounder or less and watch him succeed somewhere else. The only future he has with the Sabres would have to be wing though.

Totally agree on both players. Well said.

I get that their is a template. Crosby/malkin/stall, datsyuk/zetterberg/flipula etc. it can go many ways.

Still think trading Gringo will be a mistake. He was playing balls out the last few games of the season here. He will be on the top lines for a while till the new kids get used to NHL play. Will need some depth at center and can play wing .

He's technically a 1st line center,
But in the same way that Drury was for us
This version of the Sabres doesn't seem to be built that way, although I guess it comes down to how Bylsma plays them
In Pitt, he used Staal as his defensive center BC Crosby & Malkin were clearly better offensively
My guess is we see Eichel & Reinhart as the "scoring" centers, and Girgensons gets the tough defensive matchups

serious question for you sabres fans:

the guys in the nucks thread are offering bieksa + for eichel (and are totally serious about it). since bieksa is clearly close to eichel's value according to them, how much more do they need to add?

i said they could offer up their whole team and it wouldnt be worth eichel, and they just called me a troll. thoughts?

Challenge accepted...
Step1... Slowly smoked w a dry rub
Step2... Deep fried for a nice crispy skin & sauced
Step3... Finished on the grill for a nice char

Boom!
Best wings ever
(Yes, I have done this btw)

Although, u can leave out step1 or step3 & it still elevates the wings over just your traditional deep fry method
