He had 23 points in 59 games this year. He's a great value at 4.5M

Who are these younger, better defensemen that are available?

Sbisa?

Correct Hammer had 23 points in 59 games which isn't bad but what about age? Goal production? Skating? You want to give him a raise when all of the above are on the decline?

Krug, Gorges, Daley, Carlson, Gardiner, Braun, Hamonic, Dekeyser, Scandella, Ellis...

Lots of younger Dmen out there making less than Hammer producing as many or way more points. Now I'm not saying all are available but they are out there...

Hammer is a reigning olympics gold medallist... top 8 Canadian dman in the world. he didn't get on that team by accident.

he's a steal 4.6. he's not there to score goals, that's why you put a complimentary piece with him...

Trade Bieksa, let go of Weber and sign Erhoff to Sbisa money for 2 years to play with Hamhuis. Sbisa can drop to being a 6-7 D and you can have Corrado and then rotate Sbisa, Clendenning, Pedan and Biega in as necessary.

I don't think Erhoff is going to take Sbisa money

You are absolutely right. None of them do what Hammer does...they just put up more points for less money.

Gardiner has had 30+ points 3/4 past seasons on a god awful Leafs club before the age of 24. I think it will be awhile before we see that from Spizza...

Erhoff won't play 2/3 of the season, he will take roster spot from a waiver eligible younger player. If that's the only upgrade JB is planning on defence, a top ten pick next year is not unrealistic.

Those players can put as many points as they like; however, in order to win games they have to prevent more points than they score.

That's generally how it works... As far as I know.

What good is a defenceman that can't defend? Points from the backend are nice, and we need more of that on our roster, but not at the expense of actual defence.

The Leafs were God Awful because they couldn't defend, but they could put up points.

And still learning how to play defence, he's not Bobby Orr. I'll take Tanev any day.

Trade Hamhuis at next years TDL for draft picks...that's how it should be done if management has any clue about a path forward.
