Carolina Hurricanes President and CEO Don Waddell confirmed that the team is in the late stages of negotiations with Dallas-based Billionaire Thomas Dundon.

Dundon is the former CEO of Santander Consumer, and has an estimated net worth of over $1.1 Billion. He currently owns his own investment firm, Trinity Forest Golf Club, a 33 story office tower in Dallas, and 25% of TopGolf.

That's okay too.

Apparently they're working it in a way where Karmanos would still oversee the actual running of the team for a period of time after selling it to Dundon anyway, which is odd.

It is, actually. Dundon is only 45 years old. Apparently the reason that talks have progressed much further with Dundon than Greenberg is that Dundon has the cash to do it right now himself, whereas Greenberg was trying to put together an investor group.
