Please enlighten me. Humour me if u would. How is babcock any better than Carlisle? Randy won a cup on a stacked team in Anaheim and babcock won on a stacked team in Detroit. Horacek could have won at the Olympics so the resumes are pretty well a wash. And as far a phil goes, let's see u get fair market value for him. You won't, and by the time u finally get fed up that nobody's bit at the asking price, it'll be 3 years later and he'll be on the decline

I'm just assuming Babcock's better because Team Canada chose him to be their coach for two Olympics, and he just had teams lining up to throw the biggest ever coaching deal at him. Meanwhile RC is unemployed.

Your right. He's only won the Norris award and will likely either win it again this year or be the runner up. How much individual hardware cheeseburger Phil have under his belt? And he's playing one of the hardest positions in hockey and already has mastered at the ripe old age of 26.
- 1993_Cup_Champs

I wouldnt say mastered at all. His offensive abilities are great, but defensively he still is far from elite (though was better this year). He's definitely not worth 9m though...

If by Carlisle you mean Belinda, then Babcock is way better. That chick couldn't coach her way out of a wet paper bag! As for Randy Carlyle, he made a lot of bad decisions and has a tunnel vision style of coaching which he expected every player to just adapt to. Too old school. The best thing Babcock has said since the hiring is that with a 23-man roster, you need to coach 23 different ways.

Exactly. He won the Norris in a shortened season based solely upon offensive numbers.

Strome got easier match ups because of McDavid, and got to play with him on the PP. His playoff numbers are a big drop and he himself said he wasn't injured. Not a good skater, not overly physical. Obviously he's a good prospect, but wouldn't surprise me at all if his numbers fell next season without Mcdavid. Marner did what he did as the top guy on his team, taking the top competition.

League is leaning more and more towards small speedy forwards. Hes a strong two way player who doesn't back down from a challenge on the ice.

As for Hanifin, he's got the makings of an elite level dman, like a Neidermayer or Doughty. That could be pretty good going forward.

- Schenn-Sational!

i'll be happy with either. look at verhaeghe in niagara. got stuck behind strome so he fell through the cracks. doesn't have as much skill as dylan strome, but i'm sure they relied more on mcdavid in the playoffs, like niagara relied more on ryan strome in the playoffs over verhaeghe. i feel like either way, we are going to get a good player. if is marner, or strome, i'll be happy. if its hanifin, i'll also be happy. when strome has a year on his one being the go to guy, he will dominate. same with playing in the world juniors tournament.

marner, a bigger player than tyler johnson or johnny gaudreau, doesn't have enough size for the nhl????
when are people going to stop with this ridiculous line of thinking?
whoever has the most skill and heart at number 4 is who the leafs pick. period. regardless of size or position....god knows, they need prospects at every spot.

First person I thought of when I saw he mispelled Carlyle. I'm an 80s child.

Subban says hi
- lumlums

What a silly comparison.
Kessel's first year of his deal, lowest goal total in 7 years and the fan base wants him gone. Suban's first year of his deal, sets a career high in points and gets a Norris nomination.
Some players live up to their contracts.

Phaneuf won a Norris nomination and totalled 60 points at a much earlier age and we know how that turned out.

Both Kessel and Subban are overpaid IMO

Edit: do you honestly believe that Subban is worth what he's being paid?

It's not that we want him gone. Well most of us anyway. We realize we are in a full-on rebuild and need to use our assets to acquire draft picks and young players. By the time we are (hopefully) competitive again, it will be past Kessel's prime. Therefore, it is wisest to move him now.

I think that he's an incredibly talented guy who does a great job moving the puck forwards, but still needs to mature and learn to read the play better in the defensive zone. Last year was an improvement, but he's still not at the level defensively as the top guys who are all earning less average salary than him...

He's a dangerous player, so is Kessel. I don't think either are building blocks to a successful team.

(frank) that noise. Everyone's opinion is their own, but if the guy can make a recovery I'm rooting for him. The man couldn't even pick up his kids last year.

Yeah if he comes back to the player that he once was im all for that, but the chances are slim to none.. Odds are he comes back and is a shell of himself screwing the leafs cap wise for the remainder of his contract. I wish the guy good health but please don't come back to hockey
