You Leafs fans need to understand a thing. It's not the team that makes the player. It's the players that make the team.
Kane is not better than Kessel because he plays for Chicago. Chicago is better because Kane plays for them.
Same for any other players. Perry is not better because he plays for ANA. ANA is better because Perry plays for them.

Now, Phaneuf and Kessel both sucks as leaders, and guess what, they would still suck on any ohter team they'd play for. They're not bad leaders because they're on the Leafs. The Leafs are bad because they have Kessel and Phaneuf as leaders.

Now you're pushing it. Toews is widely considered one of the best leaders in the game. That's why Crosby called and chatted with him before taking the "C" for team Canada. But yeah Crosby was still named captain over him and the olympics if that was the argument being made

Messier is considered the greatest leader in sports. Gretzky is not. Yet Gretzky gets the C. Why? Because he's the face of the NHL, and canadian sports. Same reason why Crosby got the C. Not saying he's a poppy leader, though (not a great one, either).
