Then the Pens won't let you hire him. You wouldn't give up a third to hire Bylsma?
- Cptmjl

So be it. Makes the pens look bad. No compensation from a disparaged NJ club for shero? Now you are trying to poach from a club rich with picks?

I stated in the last board i dont believe the next head coach is the one who takes them to the promise land anyways. (echoed by pachla in this blog)

If they want Bylsma they should expect to give up a 3rd rounder for him. If they refuse to give that up, then they must not want him that badly and can seek out another option.
- jfkst1

I'm fine with giving them a 3rd rounder. The problem is we don't have one to give them this year and that's what they want. Can't get blood from a stone.

Wrong. They both got fired at the end of this season. How is that any different than Bylsma?

This article says Oilers can pick the year for the 3rd as long as its in the next 3 years. So if there's a hangup with Bylsma maybe it's the Sabres trying to use another team's 3rd.

I do not think you can since you do not have the assets to pay for both players at once if they decline both deals

if you only have 1 2016 first rd pick, you can only give that pick for 1 player

better way is try to figure out compensation to kings and make a trade

- homiedclown

According to Travis Yost you if you offer sheet 2 players at the same time you only pay one penalty....

he was a .500 coach in the playoffs after he brought in his own system...and only one team from the eastern conference won the cup during those seasons and he was bounced in the first round the year the bruins won it

It's still a decent pick, Baptiste was a 3rd rounder. One thing to give it up for a player but for a coach?

My guess would be Murray would rather give up one that he feels will end up lower. Hard to say which one that could be though.

All you need to know is he is a huge upgrade from Nolan. The Sabres aren't cup contenders and probably aren't even playoff contenders for a couple years. If his approach isn't working they can boot him and bring in someone else.
- Pierceme69

I see them as coming close to the playoffs this year... and then making them next year and possibly winning a series. Then after that for sure making the playoffs and winning at least a series.

right now the best 3rd round pick in the 2011 draft is Adam Lowry

Incorrect. Yost never said to offer them the same contract expressly because of the issue with compensation. He suggested to offer sheet Toffoli in the $5.5 million range and Martin Jones at the $3 million range. That way the compensation doesn't overlap.

I don't like how hard he was crucified during the Olympics and how much Pitt fell apart after that 2 or 3 years there when they were in the SCF back and forth with Detroit.

They had some of the best players in the world there.

I'm very on the fence.

I could use some reinforcement that it is a good hire. Some youth that he raised into big players that didn't have a Crosby/Malkin pedigree behind them.

How picky can they be? 3rd rounders aren't expected franchise changers. Plus he's a coach that's no longer of use to them. Its like a guy on craigslist selling a tube TV and wanting top dollar.

You have to be careful with offer sheets.. our first round pick will likely be pretty valuable next season.

right the kings being over the cap already cant sign Justin Williams, Toffoli and Jones, so they match one and we either have a starting goaltender or a great C
Tojo.

It's a double standard then. If they're that desperate for picks that they're enforcing it now, why didn't they enforce it a few weeks ago for NJ? This right here tells me they're up to something. Hopefully Murray tells them to F off. If they want a 3rd rounder next year, fine. So be it. But I think they're trying to get a higher pick out of us this year since we don't have a 3rd to give.
- HonkFortheGoose

First off, it's a dumb rule they need to ammend.

What happened in Pitt was with Shero they were the first team to make this choice and chose to waive rather than take compensation. They got roasted for it and looked stupid (not the first time recently) when the Sharks and Bruins got picks for McClellan and Chiarelli respectively. So I don't think the Pens or any other team will pass on compensation again.

Again, think it's a stupid rule they should change, but it is the rule.

The probability of hitting on a 3rd rounder is still quite a bit less than a 2nd rounder. That's not to say that you don't get productive guys from those rounds. My issue was that it seems Pitt was trying to force us to give them one of the higher picks this year since we don't have a 3rd rounder to provide. Now it seems they're fine with one in 2016, but Murray can't decide which one he wants to give up.

Ahh yes you are correct, sorry about that. Messed the money part up.... Even with doing that i think there is a real possibility that you get both of them with there cap struggles and them desperatley wanting to sign williams

A 3rd rounder in 2017 would be the obvious choice.

Bylsma is screwed if this doesn't work out for him. That will be three straight strikes against him since having early success.

The money comes off the books whether they get the draft pick from you guys or not. Either way that third could be part of a deal that gets them into the first round. Probably not but I know that's how they're looking at it.
- Cptmjl

The money doesn't come off the books if Murray says thanks but no thanks if Pittsburgh demands a third round pick as compensation.

I really don't think Murray would let that be a stumbling block if this is the guy he really wants but it is an option.

And again, I have no issue with Pittsburgh playing by the rules and asking for compensation. My problem is with the rule. It is a dumb rule.
