I look at that and I don't see a team that needs a rebuild they just need a few pieces. They need a number 1 centre, a number 1 defenseman, a top 4 defenseman, a goalie, a new leader and a few minor pieces.

Rielly is likely going to be that number 1. A top 4 can be signed, Franson mentioned he was interested. Goalie could be Bernier and Neuvirth or Enroth. The number 1 centre is damn near impossible to acquire and if you strip the C from Phaneuf he needs to be traded.

I think the plan is to eliminate all of the previous stigmas from the future of the Leafs. Best way to do that is a nearly complete flush of players and management personnel at a time in history when the fans are ready and willing to endure the tough years.

Habs need offense, but not Kessel. I would be very surprised if they got a forward making more than 5M. Pax makes 4.5M, they certainly won't get Kessel at 8M, especially if they sign Petry.
Now JVR on the other hand...

- fidopro

Just because you're lucky to have pax at 4.5M doesn't mean you'll get any sort of game changer for anywhere close to that.

And I think that's what you need. 1 more great offensive player to put you over the top.

Which forward will you get that will net potentially a point a game. Yes, I am assuming this past season was an anomaly for Kessel.
- BetterCallSaul

They don't necessarily need a point a game forward. I see them trading for a guy like JVR or Yak in EDM.

I think just having Babcock will change the mentality of the team. Players may need to be traded for different types of players. If they could sign Franson and Ehrhoff they could try and trade Phaneuf for a centre. Maybe Eric Staal, ROR, or Couturier if the price is right?

I'm just throwing names out there for examples not saying who should be signed or traded for.

Yes, but MB won't screw his cap management just to add offense. I think he doesn't mind paying 6M for Markov or Petry (because PK makes 9M), but I doubt he'll pay 8M for a forward when Pax, his best forward makes 4.5M. We'll see.

Would love for Couturier to be on this team. I still think every one has their eyes on the horizon though. Doesn't mean the Leafs will act like Tim Murray and toss any player who tries to play well out the door. I would hope they reward vets with contracts if they earn them. I'd like them to resign Winnik.

If the Leafs were to eat Lecavalier's contract I think the Flyers might be convinced to part with Couturier. I'm not an advocate of the complete tear down as I've suffered through a lot of terrible, terrible hockey.

Here's a trivia for you.
When is the last time you saw a UFA traded at the deadline sign 4 months later with the same team who traded him?

I actually suggested a Couturier and Lecavelier for Phaneuf deal a while back. Someone mentioned that Lecavelier probably wouldn't waive the NMC to come here.

Plek already makes 5M. Understandable because of his age and experience, been with the team for ever...
Like I said, 5M, no problem. But 8M... I don't think so.

He was traded from NYI to BUF and signed with BUF. No?
I meant signing with his previous team, like NYI.
Or Winnik for you guys.

Pietrangelo isn't going anywhere.

Also, let's not make the assumption that Oshie and/or Backes will still be here in September....

yeah the point was apparently it never happens.
I dont think the guy realized it happened last year, when moulson went back to a losing team.

not farfetched to see winnik return home for another year

Deserves a multi year contract in my opinion. Two or three.

Not impossible either. Improbable, but something feasible that I would like to see.
