I'd take Ellis or Ekholm for Sutter. NSH is probably the only team with more than four top 4 capable dmen entering next season. I'd imagine they gotta move one of them. I've heard rumors about Jones to EDM but that would have to be a massive package to get Poile to unload him.

Let's just land Mike Rielly and not worry about trading assets or big money for defenseman.

He goes against everything I've been talking about. I want youth, speed, and upside but he's definitely a buy low candidate right now. His high cap hit should hinder the amount of interested teams if Boston chose to move on from him (which from what I've read, is a serious discussion right now). It's something I'd consider for sure... I doubt you guys agree with me though.

Lucic is a giant, gaping ahole and declining by the second and only has 1 year left on his contract, there is NO WAY this team should give up the major assets it's going to take to get him, again trading for Lucic gets you a Scuderi/ Lovejoy second pairing which is unacceptable. Lucic's 20 goals are not going to make up for all the goals scored on the weak defense we would be left with, NO THANK YOU to Lucic, ROR, or any other over priced player you can think up.

No idea, but STL is loaded with C's and their D is Pieterangelo and JayBo. Taresenko will be looking at 6+....So if this dude comes back then yeah I think they will dump him for a promising D prospect.

Other than trading 71, I really cant think of many other realistic options that help hte Pens.

Ever hear of Shattenkirk and Jackman?

I'm sure I'll be burned at the stake with this one... But a D I would target would be a guy like Barrett Jackman out of St.Louis if he could be had on a 2 year deal at 3 per. I think he's got some muscle and a physical edge our D currently lacks and would be a good, trustworthy, responsible partner for Pouliot on the second pair. He's an upgraded version of Lovejoy/Scuderi+ Physicality..... But with that being said, having Scuderi and Lovejoy on the roster would make a guy like Javkman redundant even though he would represent an upgrade. But say somehow we rid ourselves of Scuds..

Letang-Mattaa
Pouliot- Jackman
Cole- Lovejoy
Doumalin

- Willaged

F Lovejoy, Pouliot and Cole seems more like a winning combination and Jackman and Dumoulin also seems like a winning combo, but I don't mind getting a Jackman or someone like him that's a little bit on the tougher side to go with the other 5 skilled guys.

James Neal could give them the skinny.

That's funny considering it was Neal who came up with the flat Stanley nickname

Shawn Mathias as a FA target is where we should be looking. Trade Sutter for a middle 6 winger and roll with what we have, which when healthy is pretty good.

Mike Rielly is a gamble. He's completely unproven and could end up being an AHL player. I want the best return possible on Sutter. Bringing in a young 2nd pairing capable dman would help the team and potentially make Harrington/Dumoulin more expendable.

For sure he's a gamble. But he's a free gamble. I just think I'd vomit trading our best trade piece, who happens to be a forward for a defenseman.

I think if D is really necessary, I'd pay the price in FA rather than trade. Petry, Franson, Green, Sekera are at least out there as D options. Frolik and Beleskey simply arent good enough and would cost too much.

Sutter isn't a high end trade asset. He's worth some, but it's not like giving up Pouliot.

On all the Sutter return stuff...

Winnik fetched a 2nd and a 4th at the deadline. Sutter should get you something like a pair or 2's or a 2 and a 3. Perhaps could even get a 1 from a desperate team.

I like the idea from whomever posted earlier that you keep Sutter into next season (unless blown away this off season), see how Oscar looks. If he's showing that he's a capable 3LC option, you could entertain moving Sutter at the deadline to recoup some assets.

You want to trade Pouliot a 1st and Sutter for TJ the overrated shrinking violet Oshie?!? Wow! That's terrible. And I think JVR could be had for less as well.
- Dcoms

Do you read? I said Oshie + or nix the first. And no, JVR cannot be had for less. Top line talent on an amazing contract. I'd actually be surprised if that's the best package offered for JVR if Babs shops him around.

The fact is, there's a very limited number of young top 6 wingers on good, long term contracts. You gotta give to get, and none of them can be had for Pouliot straight up, Sutter + Harrington, or a first rounder. You have to blow them away with a package. So its either that, or trade for a veteran, over the hill winger like we always do, or stand pat, which I'm pretty sure no one wants.

Didnt Oskar have a not so hot season in Europe? He might be further away than we want. It sound slike both him and Kap need a yr in WB unfortunately.

He didn't light up the scoreboard but I'm fairly certain that was due to usage. He's a bottom six guy. I wouldn't be surprised if he needed a year in WBS, but I also wouldn't be surprised if he made it out of camp. Remember, he almost did last season.

Yea, I gave it like a 2% chance because he's essentially already on a long term contract from buffalo. Isn't he getting paid for like the next 10 years? And also assuming he/his family loved Pittsburgh. But I do agree, he will look for a 5 year deal somewhere else.

Anyone see that article about the Pens and Mike Green? Don't freak out, its not a rumor, just a random blogger pointing him out as a top4 FA d-man option. For the same contract would you rather have Green or Franson? Or pay more for Petry/Sekera (guessing they would cost more). For the record, my vote would be Green but rather go for none of the above.

- YouMeAndDupuis9

We just don't need Green at all. We have Pouliot already and Green would fill his roll and hinder his development. We need a different brand of defenseman. A physical guy who still has enough skill to actually facilitate some sort of offense. Kind of like a Mark Staal. Unfortunately, there are none of those, so the next best thing we can do is replace what Paul Martin brought, and that's best done by signing Sekera. Out of everyone I'd rather pay extra for Sekera or go after Franson. Franson would bring more of what the Pens need than Green

It's risky letting an UFA take the ice with the idea of trading him later in the year. If he gets hurt, you lose the asset for nothing. Something this team can't afford to do. Either extend him or deal him before the season starts. I think this will be a repeat of Staal with less return.

Sekera will likely end up costing the most out of any UFA this year. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he got offers for 5+ years and $30m+.

Not to mention, Sutter was absolute trash until shortly before the trade deadline so if he repeats that performance, his value will be lower than it is now.

I can't remember what show, but they had the WB/P beat writer on. Said that Sundqvist is ready to compete for a job with the big club. Said Kappy is not. Still a year or two away.

Good point. If any GM watched him in January and February, you're talking about getting a 3rd round pick......at best.

I'd agree. Sundqvist plays a bottom 6 game and is older. I hope he gets a shot. As much as we have a need for a top 6 wing, especially on an ELC, I hope they give Kap another year in WBS. He is still young, needs to add some muscle, and new to NA... I think having him season in WBS for a year with some injury spot duty 4-8 games in the NHL would be best for his development.

Yeah thats what I heard and compete doesnt necessarily mean ready.

Speaking of Kap, there are a ton of good Fins coming into the NHL. You could practically ice a full roster of Fins under 30 and it would be a decent club.

Sundqvist is burning his ELC years now so he is very likely to be on the Pens unless he is entirely unfit for a depth forward role.
