I think they could get valuble pieces to help them moving forward more so than Phaneuf can especially if they retain a bit of salary.

Tough to say though, they made the playoffs recently and haven't changed much. If they resign Bernier and add a couple of defensemen and a top 6 forward I don't think they're that far away from competing.
