i have to know
why do any of you care what the leafs spend on there management/coaching staff
i just read a post that goes along the lines of actually getting the league to step in some way and have a say in what a coach gets paid.
that's is the most ridicules thing i have seen in regards to this babcock signing
the coach works for the team, not the league,,and just like any business, you go out and find/hire the best possible people you can, and you pay them.
The Nhl should never have a say in how a franchise runs its management team
and as far as "the teams with more money" argument hurting other teams ...well..tuff..there was a salary cap max/min put in place that ownership fought for and won, so now,the teams with bigger pockets behind them can spend the money on there front office while the lower funded teams cant compete. this is the bed you made now they have to lay in it

Because it lessens the amount the others teams get from the Leafs through revenue sharing. Not cool man, these teams cannot fend for themselves.

I'm not sure why people are calling the leafs "stupid" over this. They have the funds to easily cover this - it doesn't count against any cap space and no one is expecting this to turn them into contenders for a playoff spot in the next 3 years.
Just shows their commitment to building a solid managerial system and bringing smart hockey people. - JudoThrowFiasco
THIS. So many commentators on BR today talking about how "even Babcock won't get them into the playoffs the next couple of years". HELLO !!!! That's not the Shannaplan anyways. Dumb assess.

Its pretty obvious what Babcock's motivation was here and I can't say I blame him. My thought is why would the Leafs bring in the big gun to slog through a rebuild. Did they just want to show off a shiny new toy? Culture change? They are rebuilding right?
My point is, if they were going to blow it up anyway, why bring in Babcock who could, in four years, with a VERY impatient TO media and fanbase be a $6MM+ per year fall guy. Get someone else in there to take bullets while the team gets blown up and you are getting blue chip players via the draft. When you have the bodies for a sustained run, then you bring in Babcock or super coach X to run with it.
Unless they think they can tweak this roster and win soon? They need to figure out what they are doing here...and probably should have done it before getting the coach - grubshph
Agreed that this is not an intuitive approach to a rebuild.
Shannahan seems to be progressive in his thinking and willing to try things in a different way. Will be interesting to see how this works out and the rest of the plan unfold. |

That takes years even if you hit on your picks. There will be duds along the way. Its inevitable. Plus they need the picks to get more irons in the fire. So they will trade any vet worth a damn (JVR) if they can (Kessel and Phaneuf will be tough to move) for picks, therefore bottom out and get higher picks. I honestly think Babcock gets in the way of this plan. |

The only people who care how much the leafs paid for Babcock is the fans of teams who can't afford to throw out an offer like that. Same fans who liked to throw out whenever money was brought up the "oh you guys are the richest team in the league what has that ever got ya". Well they just went out and bought the best coach on the planet so there's that. Thanks for coming out. |

Made the playoffs once in the last decade and still bringing in the most money of any team in the league so yeah I'd say so. |

Its funny how many people complain about the money the leafs throw at people, cause if it wasent for the leafs we might have 5 less teams in the NHL. |

Apparently, all of a sudden, Carlyle, Burke, Nonis and Wilson were all good at their job. It was Toronto that ruined them.
(frank), you never hear any praise for the guys when they're in Toronto, as soon as they leave, they're (frank)ing phenomenal again. |

it won't really be up to Babcock. if the organization develops and acquires good players, he'll be successful in Toronto. if they don't, he'll be another Randy Carlyle. he's a great coach. and he's in the discussion for best in the game with Quenneville and Vigneault (Jon Cooper is getting there too). but he still needs horses. he hasn't had them in Detroit in the last 5-6 years and so he didn't win much. but he had them early on in Detroit (2 Cup finals, one win) and he had them with TC (2 golds). going to be a few years before we can start judging this move. |
