Bob Duff: Leafs offer too good for Babcock to refuse
Wings wouldn't match money or term offered by Toronto in order to keep their coach.

Money Talks.. Now who does Shanny bring in as GM ?

I'm not sure why people are calling the leafs "stupid" over this. They have the funds to easily cover this - it doesn't count against any cap space and no one is expecting this to turn them into contenders for a playoff spot in the next 3 years.

Just shows their commitment to building a solid managerial system and bringing smart hockey people.

you do realize, that Babcock has power that he can veto the GM when it comes to player personel. Why would a GM want a part of a job that his coach can essentially get him fired? that sounds like a potentially volatile situation.

No crayon just truth. You got the best coach on the market.
Congrats boys. I clap for you. But Carlyle had your team figured out and he has a cup too. What a chump organization zzzzz or I should say city

- QuickSCF

Babcock oozes credibility, the players have no way out and will need to perform. Love Carlyle but he does not have the credibility Babcock brings.

Forward thinking companies are using a team system where everyone has input. Makes a lot more sense than one blowhard calling all the shots.

do you have a source for that?

sounds like the leafs will be using an expanded version of the model colorado has with Roy, paper pusher gm and sakic.

not surprised that babcock was sold both on money and control to come to Toronto. gives him the opportunity to really put his stamp on the team.

Shanny has the final say, and as he has stipulated on multiple occasions everything will be a group decision. Nothing is left to autonomy.

This was, according to most non-Leafs fans on Hockeybuzz, the sole reason why he would not take the job

it was a logical conclusion to arrive at based on what babcock said and the state of the leafs roster now.

Yeah.

But, no matter how bad the Leafs are, or for how long, it's an attractive destination for people in sports with ego's (plus the money doesn't hurt )

But he's gets to start with a relatively clean slate from ground zero and help build a team he would like to build, once Dion and Phil are traded.

"But the money? Holy cow.

Yes it’s stupid money, and stupid term for that matter, but it’s the Leafs after all.

Stupid is who they are. It’s what they do."

Didn't expect this troll like comment from a blogger.

It's hilarious how people get pissed at the leafs for not spending money (They only care about the bottom line!) then they get even more pissed when they do spend money.

How is using your resources to sign the best coach in the NHL stupid?
In regards to salary, and term, its just money. It's not your money, it's not our money, the organization has deep pockets and its a drop in the bucket to them.

hey hey hey....

they may have kessel, lupul, & phanuef locked up to horrible contracts......
they may lack leadership and character...
they may have the worst media b.s. going on...
they may also have no young star power (19-25)...
they may be the least desirable destinations for players...

but................but................ they have nylander and reilly!
so that's what Babcock sees.... it's not about the mon.....HAHAHA

- AlfieisKing

Kessel is paid on par with the other top 5 scorers of the past 5 years. no star power 19-25? ahh Rielly, Nylander, Brown, Strome/Marner/Hanifin?? least desirable destination??? dude it's not ottawa.

Babcock took the money, but he has a chance to become a hero in Toronto

Carlye had figured out how to get outshout 45-25 every game and still squeak out points. If Carlyle was so highly regarded, why hasn't he been linked with any other teams since?

Babcock was the biggest "free agent" coach to ever hit the market. leafs did well to get him with money that doesnt affect the cap

You must of been in the room when he was signing his contract to see that clause where he gets the power to veto any move made by the GM. He said openly in the interview with Dreger that he's a coach that what he does. He has no skills to be a GM so he'll leave that up to the GM. Sure he'll have an opinion but he won't be Vetoing anything. Suck it up you guys still have babs lite

Guy has his cup and his gold medal. He just took toronto to the cleaners. He don't care he already won everything. Now let's get some money for the family.

As for success is he really that much better than Carlyle?? Both have a Cup ring. Babcock has international experience but look at the awesome team he had. And he almost lost to TedNolans Latvia team if it weren't for a few brilliant Carey Price saves in the 3rd.

Toronto had their coach.., a coach who had them 3rd in the Atlantic which a crap team. We saw how bad it turned when they fired him..

- QuickSCF

I think you're just sour because LA's bubble just burst and now they're in cap hell with two of the worst contracts in the league in Richards and Brown and can't make the playoffs. I don't know why you're taking it so hard, you've probably only been a hockey fan for 3 years anyways. Just go back to watching basketball
