Again, reports are that the money was the same. Which means he's taking less in Toronto after taxes. He had a talk with Hunter about the Leafs' future, and his role in the organization, and that's what tipped the balance.

I'd understand vilifying him if it was just about the money, but in this case it clearly isn't, or he would have gone back to Buffalo asking for even more.

He still used them as leverage, that doesn't take away that point. And good for him, honestly, get what the market will give ya.

I can't see making him the bad guy either. The world is not ending - he is a great coach, probably one of the best 2 or 3 in the league, but there are other very good coaches available too - Buffalo will get one of them. Congrats to the Leafs, they didn't do anything we wouldn't have done (in fact we tried).

Now, if he all but told TP that the deal was done, and that he would be arriving in Buffalo today or tomorrow to finalize, then all of a sudden decided that he would pursue a different offer, then I don't blame TP and company for being upset by that, but as we all know, nothing is done until the signature is on the dotted line...

Once in a life time opportunity and he cashed in. nothing wrong with that. Hopefully sabres brass can keep a level head and move on.

From the reports, it seems he genuinely was leaning towards Buffalo until Monday, when he talked to Hunter.

He's still with the Leafs. I believe Buffalo would have to pay draft pick compensation to get him.
- Feeling Glucky?

That's not typical. Generally teams let guys interview for positions that would be promotions over where they currently are. It happens all the time. Detroit threw that stipulation in for Babcock so that he could interview with teams earlier. They very well could have made him wait until July 1st when he wasn't under contract anymore.

Dubas mentioned that Leafs want to develop coaches that opposing teams will want to hire and pay compensation (draft picks) for.

Whatever he had with Ken Holland is my guess? Maybe more? Involvement throughout the process.

So does toronto make a serious push for mcdavid. If possible what would it even take to get him?

From the reports, it seems he genuinely was leaning towards Buffalo until Monday, when he found out murray wasn't willing to give up any kind of power.

I hope so because I don't want him in a leafs uni. Either way they would have nothing left to be a threat if they somehow pulled it off.

which still doesn't make him a villain.

Why wouldn't a competitive coach want more power over the roster he's icing?

Doesn't really matter, since Dineen is with the Hawks.

If you're going to be upset with someone, be upset with your GM, who didn't give him the kind of offer he was looking for. Dollar figures and term are supposedly equal, or greater on the Buffalo end. And after taxes and living expenses he's taking less in TO.

I thought we were talking Gord Dineen

Explains why I don't remember him being an NHL coach.

Nope. Def not. Did you miss the part where I said he coached for Florida? Read more. Post less.
