WOWOOOOWW... and he gets basically full control of the team as GM and Coach.

I wanted him in Buffalo too but I have loved everything that Murry has done thus far and I feel like we are very close to the team that he wanted here. I would worry that if Babcock came in with full control that he would basically want to gut half or part of the team again to bring in his type guys.

But everyone said he didn't want to be a GM....

If Babcock leaves Detroit, he gets promoted. No way that happens in my opinion

I thought I read somewhere he's signed for 3 years. I can't imagine Detroit letting him go.

This is far more important than any coach they would have landed.

Good point. I'm not devastated. Disappointed, yes, but there are still some good candidates out there, and this will not make or break this rebuild....

I dont.

I wanted babcock to be the sabres next coach, so admittedly this has a little sour grapes to it but..

From an on ice perspective what is better about toronto than buffalo? Absolutely nothing IMO. For the guy who wanted the best chance at a cup im not arguing its here in buffalo, but i will argue it is absolutely not in toronto.

With the albatross contracts they almost certainly wont shed themselves entirely from, a team that underachieved big time last season, minus a few, literally three prospects (nylander, reilly, strome?) Babcock will certainly coach the leafs away from the lottery and will miss out on the auston matthews sweepstakes next season.

If he does land in toronto, and coach them out of an opportunity to draft a generational talent im going to laugh even harder everytime eichel walks all over the leafs for the next 10+ years.

Yeah but can't have it both ways. The fact that we are now an organization that has a chance at top coaches/players is pretty remarkable. Things don't always work out but they gave it a shot.

If the $8 million a year report is accurate, could it be possible that Pegula closed up the checkbook?

I agree, but not going after the top guy like Babcock, however, just to for a better shot at a consolation prize isn't worth it.

Could be the dual title being offered that raised the price. Maybe it's 5.5 as Coach and 2.5 as GM?
