Maybe one last dinner in Detroit? Maybe Murray doesn't want to give up control?
- thatsapickle

I've already mentioned before the wings lost in the playoffs that Murray has all the control, Nolan didn't agree.

As many leafs fans pointed out, this was foolish. They absolutely need to finish last for a couple of years.
- Slump Buster

Depending on how bad the roster is, Babcock wouldn't be enough to pull them out.

A coach can only work with what he's given.

It's more important to ensure the players come up in a proper system, rather than going back and forth between different coaches who don't stick to a plan ( )

Rumour has it the Leafs were willing to make him the highest paid coach in hockey... Their coffers can go toe-to-toe with anyone else's in a bidding war, if that's what it comes down to.
- Feeling Glucky?

They can bid all day long, Pegula hasn't even sold any oil wells yet.

I think it's pretty apparent it's not all about money here.
- TheSabresTaco

No, and odds are Toronto would also offer him some say in roster decisions that coaches don't normally get... what with that empty GM seat and all... that being said, I'm not putting any money on him being the Leaf's coach.

Personally, I'd love Toronto to get the other Hunter brother for that role.

I think the Leafs could of had a much better team (read: compete for playoffs) with a much more competent coach. I couldn't even understand how that team collapsed like it did. Woof.

young group that got smacked in game 7 and let it ruin them psychologically. Whenever they have success they start doubting themselves and go on long losing streaks.

Carlyle's system also didn't help that much, it maximized offense, but relied heavily on goaltending, which lead to big swings that exacerbated the team's self-sabotaging.

I think Shanny had Horachek on board knowing that at some point in the season the slide would start, and rather than finish middle of the pack, he wanted to make sure he'd have a guy that'd get him a top-5 pick

I still have a feeling he stays in Detroit.
- Pierceme69

I think I'm starting to feel that way also. Maybe buffalo doesn't have any chance. This could be his way to force Holland to raise his salary and give him more power.

I liked how he sold a couple billion dollars of land so he could buy the Bills with cash.

I mean yeah I saw what happened. They had a few winning streaks, couple losing streaks here and there. Suddenly 2015 comes around and EVERYONE sucks! How!!!! It's mind blowing if you really think about it. Even playing more defensively responsible, which is ancient, foreign language in Toronto, collapsing by that amount is just... insane.

Horachek is just really bad at coaching.

well, Buffalo's got an Eichel... Leafs don't. For all that was said about McDavid, many consider him to be a generational talent as well.

Now if the Leafs get some lottery luck next season, all that could change very quickly.

Idk if this murray control factor is that extreme...The goal was to finish last and he was making sure nothing was done to screw it up. He's finally allowed to try and manage a winning team. Paul Hamilton mentioned today murray is not one to micromanage and usually is scouting.

Really? That's the excuse? Mid point of the year, The Leafs were on pace to get the 5th seed into the play-offs. They were doing just fine until the whole "tank for McDavid" scared the higher ups of that joke of an organization. And don't even get me started on how on earth any team would be willing to trade for media tire fire pseudo lumberjack Phil Kessel.

they were 8th and falling when they fired Carlyle.

It was the same story they'd seen the year before, and they didn't need a Carlyle late season push to spoil the pick.

You really shouldn't be pointing the finger at other teams for intentionally tanking, either, fan of the team with the most obvious tank roster in recent history.

I think some people are taking the "what sort of control does Babcock want?" way out of context. Pretty sure Babcock would just want to have some sort of say, or at least throw in a professional opinion about which of his players are fit for his system and/or which players on the other 29 teams might be a better fit.

If anything, I think a head coach and GM should have that sort of communication. Murray has shown he's not afraid to pull the trigger and Babcock has made some pokes at Holland for not getting the players.

Says the team who intentionally sits their high scoring forwards on the 4th line and trading a roster player for one who is retired. Please, you guys had 46 points at the end of December, but "out of no where" take a nose dive to finish the season with 68. Toronto did more of an intentional tank job than anything. But sure, Buffalo is the team with no "competitive integrity", right?
