Say there's a deal to be had of a Semin and Jordy package deal and they're willing to retain half of Semin's contract, roughly 3.5 mil. What if we say only retain 2 mil of Semin but also retain 1 mil of Staal. That way we can see if Semin can bounce back and earn that 5 mil pay check for a year or so and try to trade him and we have the best shut down center in the league locked up for his career at 5 mil. Who's interested?

i just think that would be too much salary to make work, especially when you consider that a lot of the young cheap ELCs we are planning on slotting in now would probably have to go the other way.

Add one more to my corner! Problem is that none of our cap dumps (Scuderi, Kunitz) would waive to go there. So it's likely Spaling + meh prospect or maybe even Spaling + Bennett given the Canes retaining so much salary.

He's not a can't miss guy but the risk/reward @ $3.5M and cost to acquire is the best we will find.

Not sure if this is right, but while it lists Scuderi with a limited NTC, Kunitz doesn't have one. Same with that new site general fanger. So that is a possibility. Kunitz probably has more value then Semin right now and probably sounds better than just dead cap space.

If the Canes fan from a couple days ago who wanted Sutter, Dumoulin, and a 2nd for Staal close to accurate, then Sutter, Doumolin, Kunitz, and 2016 3rd for Staal, Semin, and 3M retained in final year of Semin's deal? Probably eats up most of our cap space, but if the price of adding Staal meant potentially having someone like Comeau as the final guy in our top 6 I'd take that tradeoff.

Not interested in the least to acquire Alex Semin ... at all. No on Staal too.

I don't want to mislead you, but I believe it is dependent on the position they are hired into. So if anyone is hired into a GM or HC position that is on an active contract with the organization, the team losing the individual is compensated a 3rd rounder (if they want it).

okay, well your educated guess is better than mine. It's a shame we are morally above accepting "free" 3rd round picks. Between Hynes, Bylsma, and Shero...imagine if we managed to get 3 extra third round picks.

Well I just read that some others disagree with this approach, if that works financially ($2M more), I do that deal 100 times out of 100.

Perron-Sid-Horny
??-Malkin-Semin
Dupuis-Staal-Winnik
Wilson/Sundqvist/Lappy/Comeau/Farnham/Rust/Downie/Spaling/whoever

So many variables, its hard to make a lineup. Malkin still has a hole on his left wing that could be filled by Kapanen/Bennett/Dupuis/FA..but just a general idea...I like it way more than last seasons roster.

Has a team retained salary for that long yet?

I think thats pretty accurate. If Dupes cant come back it helps. Either way, they're not in a good position. They need 2 top 6 F's, 3 bottom 6 players and they need to sign a Dman.

That's another reason to ride out next season as a 'gap' year as I have suggested previously as an option. Reset the team without blowing anything up & stay competative.

Not interested, that is going to force us to really make more moves to shed further cap, and we won't get a good return overall. Unless Scuderi somehow waives (he won't), you just added on 10 mil in cap space when we had only about 7-8 to spare.

Now, I would like to have both players, I just don't see that deal being feasible, unless you are dumping Scuderi, Kunitz, and or Spaling for it. I still don't see Sutter being moved, at least not back to Carolina for this scenario.

LA is about to do that with Richards... Toronto's buyout of Gleason was a 4 year process I think.

Staal in this example would be for 8 years... So ummm, no, don't think thats ever happened, but we've all seen crazier.

Yea I know they've done it on buyouts was wondering more if a team had traded and retained for more then a season. I guess Carolina did it for a little over a season with jokinen.

You mean for Staal? CAR has no reason to do that and I wouldnt expect them to...that's a ridiculously long time.

For Semin, I could see 3 years of retention for the right price.

Well when you consider what we have going the other way in the hypothetical deal, we're only adding ~$3M...and we have $9M to play with from Martin and Ehrhoff..so its a good use of some of that cash imo
