I just don't see protecting your stars as being nearly as important these days. Who's protecting Tyler Johnson's line in Tampa? How about Toews in Chicago? Datsyuk or Zetterberg in Detroit? Gaudreau and Monahan in Calgary? The list goes on. If any type of "protection" is needed it's coming from one of two places these days; from the player himself (McDavid is 6'1 190 already so it's not like he's gonna be weak) or from the backend (Hedman, Seabrook, Ericsson, etc).

With guys like Nurse and Klefbom climbing the ranks, needless to say, I'm not worried.

I agree it's less of a factor these days, but it is still a concern. Look at the abuse Crosby has taken over his career. Grapes points out the Lemieux, as big as he was, did not have protection and suffered for it, but that was in the 90's.
When things get a little hairy vs the Hawks, they put Bickel on with Toews, even though he's 6'1".
I'd prefer a large, fast winger who can hold his own in the corners to help gain possession in the O zone and also be there if, rather when, some opponent takes liberties with McDavid or Ebs. I've said I'd like a guy like Brouwer or Brent Burns. Guys with size, speed & skill who can stand up for their smaller line mates when needed. To me, it's all about balanced lines. You can load up with all the danglers on the pp.

Lemieux also had this thing called cancer which- and I'll go out on a limb here- had a lot more to do with his career.

It was VERY rare for Toews to play with Bickell.

Certainly size has it's purposes and can help, but not at the expense of effectiveness. I'm not gonna push a guy like Eberle down in the line-up unless the player pushing him down makes his line more effective.

See Pouliot, for example. As far I saw, RNH and Eberle were more effective with him than they were with Hall (as short a sample, as it may have been) and as a result have no issue moving Hall to a different line in hopes he can help make that other line more effective.

I think you have to stick with Pouliot / RNH / Eberle and then go with Hall / McDavid / ????

He certainly gets the first chance at it as far as I'm concerned, but we've been through this before; if he can't produce on such as line after 10-15 games, he's going to have to lose that spot.

For sure. I hope he can play like he did the last part of the season. We drafted the guy to score goals so we need to play him with guys who can create space for him.

So Grapes thinks the lack of protection gave Mario cancer? time to put that old douchetard out to pasture.
